Oriented strand board (OSB), also known as flake board, sterling board and aspenite osb is a type of engineered wood similar to particle board, formed by adding synthetic resins and then compressing layers of wood strands (flakes) in specific orientations. OSB may have a rough and variegated surface with the individual strips of around 2.5 cm × 15 cm (1.0 by 5.9 inches), lying unevenly across each other and comes in a variety of types and thicknesses. In the outer layers strands are generally oriented longitudinally in line with the panel length, whereas in the middle layers strands generally lie in a cross wise direction. Panel density (and thus panel mass) varies depending upon the product, being affected by the timber species and the manufacturing process. Typical densities are 600-680kg/m_. Thus, for example, a 2400 x 1200 x 15mm panel will weigh approximately 28 kg.
