Purpose of list Water absorptiveness of paper board or other materials is a function of various characteristics such as sizing, porosity, etc. The Gurley-Cobb sizing test can be used to test absorption or resistance to absorption of water, oil and other liquids. Principle This procedure determines the quantity of water absorbed by a sample of paper or other sheet material in a specified time and under standardized conditions. Other liquids such as ink, beverages, oil and water based solutions may be used instead of water. The standard area is one hundred square centimeters (cm2), into which 100cc of liquid are poured to reach a specific height of 1 cm. For smaller samples, proportionately smaller areas (25 and 10 cm2) can be tested. Description The Gurley-Cobb Sizing Tester consists of a hollow metal cylinder or ring (100, 25 or 10 cm2 inside area); a metal base plate with a clamping device to hold the ring against the sample and a Neoprene mat. Neoprene gaskets also are supplied to seal off the cylinder when testing uneven materials where an ungasketed seal is difficult to maintain. A critical component of this test is a solid stainless steel roller having a smooth face 20cm wide and weighing 10.0+ 0.5kg. Also required for the test are a 100ml graduated cylinder, a balance with sensitivity of 0.01g or better, blotting paper and a timer or stopwatch.

Friability Tester is specially to determine the durability of tablets from the time of production to the time use, as its is important to test abrasion and impact hardness of the tablets. The apparatus consist of transparent acrylic drums. The drums are equipped with a plastic blade which carries the tablets along with it up to predetermined height while the drums are rotating and tablets are allowed to slide and let them slide down. The tablets are weight before and after the rubbing in the drum have taken place. The Difference in weight indicates the rate of abrasion.

The tile sample is pressed under a specified load against a grinding path strewn evenly with an abrasive powder revolving at the rate of 30 + 1 r.p.m. At the end of 100 revolutions of the disc the second parallel side of the tile is subjected to wear for an equal number of revolutions of the disc. The wear of tile is measured using a thickness gauge. The Abrasion testing machine consists of a replaceable grinding path fitting on to a disc rotating its vertical axis. The rotating disc and grinding path are enclosed by a circular tray. A bracket holds the specimen. The loading is by a counter balanced lever. A funnel is provided to facilitate charging the grinding path with abrasive powder. Supplied complete with automatic preset revolution counter and one 7.5 kg weight but without abrasive powder and thickness gauge. Suitable for operation 230 V, single phase, Ac supply.
