They have surface treatment on the rods where the corrosion resistance is specified in different levels. Other typical cylinder types are Inner/Outer Boom cylinders, Extension cylinders, Support legs and Slewing cylinders. An extremely advanced product is the sequence cylinder which is used when the crane has more than 5 extensions and the application requires the cylinder to work in a sequential order both extending as well as retracting.
