Passivation is a process that removes “free iron” contamination left behind on the surface of the componentsparts as a result of machining and fabricating processes. These contaminants are potential corrosion sites which, if not removed, result in premature corrosion and ultimately result in deterioration of the components. Materials engineers in high tech industries such as aerospace and electronics have been using, for many years now, the technique of chemical Passivation to prevent corrosion. In this process a chemical treatment accelerates the formation of an extremely thin, about 0.0000001 inch thick, oxide film on the surface of the clean part. This film prevents further corrosion of the surface.
