Furnaces generally have coils constructed from heavy copper tubing. Furance Transformers are special & sophisticated Transformers designed and tuned to the inverter circuit which applies a medium frequency (generally 500 Hz or 1000 Hz) voltage to the Induction coil. The charge ( Load) is heated by eddy currents induced by magnetic fields of the induction coils. Since the quality, volume and content of the charge is not always uniform the design has to be that much more robust and flexible. Medium frequency is necessary to enhance the rate of heat generation. The inverter circuit requires a D.C. On- load tap changer to provide +5% to – 15% taps in steps of 1.25%. Of-circuit tap changer to provide +5% to = 7.5% and +5% to – 10% taps in steps of 2.5%.
