Designed for multistoried buildings, this system occupies a smaller sheave than conventional geared and gearless elevators. The reduced sheave size, together with a redesigned machine makes the whole package compact thus allowing the machine to be mounted within the hoist way itself and so eliminating the requirement for a machine room on the roof.

These elevators typically operate at speeds from 1.7 to 2.5 meter per second and carry loads up to 1,360 kgs. The electric motor in the design drives a gear-type reduction unit, which turns the hoisting sheaves. This system operates on a less powerful motor, hence consumes less energy comparatively. An electrically controlled brake between the motor and reduction unit stops the elevator at the desired floor.

These elevators typically operate at speeds greater than 2.5 meters per second. In gearless traction machine, woven steel cable hoisting ropes are attached to the top of the elevator car and wrapped around the drive sheave in special grooves. The other ends of the cable are attached to the counterweight that moves up and down in the hoist way on its guiderails. The combined weight of the elevator car and the counterweight presses the cables into the grooves providing the necessary traction as the sheave rotates.
