Hopcalite is a mixture of copper and manganese oxides used as catalyst to convert carbon monoxide into carbon dioxide when exposed to the oxygen in air. Hopcalite is also used to remove ethylene oxide, VOCs and ozone in various situations. The second is a Desiccant. Desiccants are standard air purification chemicals that are effective in removing excess water vapor. They accomplish this through chemical reactions that absorb moisture or through capillary condensation, also known as adsorption. Desiccants are efficient and practical for drying and purifying gas. Both chemicals can hold carbon monoxide and other poisonous toxic fumes created by fire. The concentration and flow rate of the two chemicals determine the active protection time of the filter; the Narwahl Fire Escape Mask provides a minimum protection time of 40 minutes.
