This is a filtration system to remove fine suspended solids in the treated water. A pressure sand filter consists of a pressure vessel - this could be either vertical or horizontal-fitted with a set of frontal pipe work and valves, graded sand supported by layers of graded under bed consisting of pebbles and silex, a top distributor to distribute the incoming water uniformly throughout the cross section of the filter, and an under drain system to collect filtered water. Back washing system removes the trapped contaminants within the filter bed and washes them down the drain. The pressure applied to the joint face of each filtering plate must withstand the chamber internal pressure developed by the sludge pumping system. This vertical plate layout forms water tight filtration chambers allowing easy mechanisation for the discharge of cakes. Filter clothes finely or tightly meshed are applied to the two grooved surfaces in these plates.screw pump feed the sludge to be filtered under pressure in the filtration chamber. They are usually placed in the center of the plates allowing a proper distribution of flow, right pressure and better drainage of sludge within the chamber. Solids sludge gradually accumulates in the filtration chamber until the final compacted cake is formed.
