Total Dissolved Solids (TDS) are the total amount of mobile charged ions, including minerals, salts or metals dissolved in a given volume of water, expressed in units of mg per unit volume of water (mg/L), also referred to as parts per million (ppm). TDS is directly related to the purity of water and the quality of water purification systems and affects everything that consumes, lives in, or uses water, whether organic or inorganic, whether for better or for worse. Common water filter and water purification systems: Carbon filtration: Charcoal, a form of carbon with a high surface area, adsorbs (or sticks to) many compounds, including some toxic compounds. Water is passed through activated charcoal to remove such contaminants. Reverse osmosis (R.O.): Reverse osmosis works by forcing water under great pressure against a semi-permeable membrane that allows water molecules to pass through while excluding most contaminants. This series of steam sterilizable electrodes are designed for economical use. They are constructed very similar to the standard pH electrodes, have a 10 and 12mm body, and can be ordered with the desired length. Length is determined by the insertion depth on the under side of the fermentor head plate to the tip of the probe. Glass disposable electrodes are available in galvanic styles to fill all requirements. The glass DO probes are available for laboratory fermentation, where sterilization takes place in a separate autoclave. A TDS Meter indicates the Total Dissolved Solids (TDS) of a solution, i.e. the concentration of dissolved solids in it. Since dissolved ionized solids such as salts and minerals increase the conductivity of a solution, a TDS meter measures the conductivity of the solution and estimates the TDS from that. Dissolved organic solids such as sugar and microscopic solid particles such as colloids, do not significantly affect the conductivity of a solution so a TDS meter does not include them in its reading. Unit of TDS Meter: A TDS meter typically displays the TDS in parts per million (ppm).
