Bentonite is an absorbent aluminium phyllosilicate clay consisting mostly of montmorillonite. The different types of bentonite are each named after the respective dominant element, such as potassium (K), sodium (Na), calcium (Ca), and aluminium (Al). Experts debate a number of nomenclatorial problems with the classification of bentonite clays. Bentonite usually forms from weathering of volcanic ash, most often in the presence of water. However, the term bentonite, as well as a similar clay called tonstein, has been used to describe clay beds of uncertain origin. For industrial purposes, two main classes of bentonite exist: sodium and calcium bentonite. In stratigraphy and tephrochronology, completely devitrified (weathered volcanic glass) ash-fall beds are commonly referred to as K-bentonites when the dominant clay species is illite. In addition to montmorillonite and illite another common clay species that is sometimes dominant is kaolinite. Kaolinite-dominated clays are commonly referred to as tonsteins and are typically associated with coal.

A good quality Bentonite Clay should be a greenish grey/cream color and anything bordering “pure white” is suspect. It has a very fine, velveteen feel and is odorless and on-staining. Our Cosmetic Grade Bentonite Clay is Sodium Bentonite. We come into contact with a huge range of toxins numerous times every day. These toxins are given off from common products like a plant, cleaning supplies, cosmetics, commercial skin care products, and even polluted air. Bentonite Clay is known for its ability to absorb and remove toxins, heavy metals, impurities and chemicals. When hydrated, Bentonite Clay produces a strong negative electrical charge which bonds to the positive charge in many toxins. Bentonite Clay also rapidly swells open like a sponge. The clay draws the toxins into it through electrical attraction and once there, they bind together. Bentonite Clay is suitable for use on normal to oily skin types. Due to the intensive property of Bentonite Clay, we do not recommend for use on dry or sensitive skin. Our Cosmetic Grade Bentonite Clay is for external use only.
