With the sharp rise of stress at work, difficult deadlines and long commutes, we are seeing a different kind of hairfall today – one that is caused by a high degree of mental stress. Ayurveda tells us that a high degree of mental stress can excite vata dosha. In these situations we would typically see an inability or difficulty falling asleep, an inability to focus, severe restlessness, varying appetite with occasional binge eating, difficulty in switching off after work and a very high use of laptops or cell phones as you continue to work long after normal work hours. Sudden, inexplicable hairfall Stress takes about 180 days to show up on hair, so when we receive complaints of sudden, inexplicable hairfall, we try and trace events that occurred about 3 – 4 months back to understand the cause.  Stress appears to excessively stimulate our androgenic hormones, perhaps to help with our flight or fight response. While the physical pathway of how stress works continues to be unravelled, its net result on hair and skin is quite certain. In times of stress, your hair’s Anagen phase abruptly shifts to Catagen phase. In normal hair, atleast 85% of hair is supposed to be in Anagen phase at any point of time, and only 1% transitions to Catagen phase.  This ratio is altered in times of stress, as a large proportion of Anagen phase hair shifts abruptly to the Catagen phase. This causes a sudden loss of much larger amounts of hair.    Drying out of scalp and hair High stress and therefore excitation of vata dosha increases dryness across the body. “Just like a plant sprouts new and tender leaves by the regular supply of water to its roots,   so also the tissues of the human body grow with a freshness and luxuriance by oil application on the skin and hair. “ – Sushruta Samhita       Why is hair oiling so essential in Ayurveda:   The eyes are considered a seat of pitta (besides the liver which is also an important pitta point). By their activity and by the signals they send to the brain, the eyes and the brain generate heat or pitta in the body, which needs to be controlled so that they can function normally.   Excess pitta leads to premature greying, weakens the digestive Agni leading to frequent diarrhoea or loose motion, and can cause diseases of pitta like jaundice, high fevers, inflamed skin, dermatitis with itchy skin, etc. In order to bring down the pitta, regular oiling of the areas which generate pitta like the head are a must. Through frequent use of oil in this area, new hair growth is encouraged, the hair grows deep rooted, strong and firm, does not break easily and grows longer and more thicker and luxuriantly.       Why is a modern shampoo laden with synthetic surfactants bad for hair? The most important ingredient in a shampoo is the part that cleans. And this comes ingredients like SLS, SLES or even ALS (Ammonium lauryl sulphate) and its ethoxylated cousin ALES (ammonium Laureth sulphate). We are extremely concerned about the all pervasive and toxic nature of SLS and SLES – you will find SLS / SLES in almost everything that foams and is a cleanser of some sort from your laundry detergent to your baby wash and of course your shampoo.   Sulphates were initially used as cheap detergents – typically in car washes and mechanic workshops to easily cut through axle grease. They are today widely used to lift off grease from hair and to clean your body, face and even your clothes. The 3 major concerns over the use of SLS and SLeS in shampoos:   We have 3 major concerns over the almost obsessive use of SLS and SLES by the consumer product industry. The first is that both these Lauryl Sulfates  are almost too effective at stripping hair (and skin)  of its protective layer of oil – the result, all the vital and necessary sebum in your hair which protects the cuticles and its integrity is stripped out, leaving it dull and lifeless.   The second issue is of its nature as an irritant. The Journal of the American college of Toxicology notes that concentrations of SLS that are as low as 0.5% (and upto 10%) cause slight to moderate skin irritation, while 10% - 30% routinely causes skin corrosion and severe irritation. Ironically, in lab testing of skin care products like healing creams or lotions, skin is first irritated using SLS before it can be healed with the test product! SLS also causes severe eye irritation which is a point of note if you want to use it in a shampoo that is definitely going to reach your eyes.    The third issue is of destruction and aging – and this should get your interest right now. SLS is described as a protein de-naturing compound. So with consistent use, it will break down the protein matrix of your hair, effectively stopping hair regeneration and impeding its health. Severely chemically treated hair becomes extremely porous because of multiple injuries to the hair cuticle. Is your hair curly? perpetually dry? Full of static when you comb it? Does it tangle easily? Does it break when you brush / comb it, tug at it or wash it? Has it often been described as "vekkal" or straw ? Have you been religiously using conditioners, leave-on serums and intensive repair products on your hair on the advice of your stylist and still seeing no change? Does even using a so called gentle baby shampoo leave your hair feeling dried out? The Myth of the Gentle and Conditioning Shampoo:   Unlike what synthetic shampoos tell you, using a shampoo and conditioner will not give you healthy or well nourished hair. The purpose of a hair wash product is to cleanse your hair of oil, dead cells and debris. This cleansing has to be done without altering the pH of the scalp and hair, without damaging the delicate cuticular structure of your hair, and without altering the working of your sebaceous glands.   However, time and again we have seen how this delicate balance of the hair and scalp is shattered repeatedly by the use of a synthetic shampoo. The primary surfactants in any synthetic shampoo (SLS and SLeS) are extremely harsh, synthetic degreasing agents developed for industrial cleaning. Here’s the crucial point here: even if you are buying a SLS free or sulphate free synthetic shampoo, you are still buying a shampoo whose primary ingredient is a commercial surfactant. A commercial surfactant is designed to do one thing and one thing only – remove oil and remove dirt. By the nature of this format which is application plus immediately rinsing, it is untrue to expect any delivery of nutrition, health or well being. Then why does your hair temporarily feel smooth and glossy after using a shampoo?      All of us buy into this shampoo hair health myth because of a single reason: silicones / artificial conditioning agents. The irony is that silicones were first added to shampoos in order to smoothen out hair that was damaged by the harshness of shampoos. As shampoos started out being alkaline, they tampered with hair’s structure and caused damage in the cuticular structure leaving hair drier, frizzier and full of static. Silicones and other conditioning agents and pH adjusting agents were added to shampoo formulations to smoothen over these defects. Please note the use of the word “smoothen over” – the silicones do not heal or repair but simply added an artificial smooth layer over the damaged hair that mislead you into believing that your hair is actually healthy.    So when we begin washing and over washing our hair with a synthetic shampoo, our hair feels smooth and shiny because of the silicones in the shampoo. The hair also looks glossy for a while and we are fooled into believing that our hair is healthy and full of life. Soon, the excessive oiliness on the scalp, the thinning of the hair, the fact that the hair breaks easily and the hairfall now make us understand that the smoothness and glossiness we were temporarily fooled by were just decoys – our hair is in real danger.   The Krya difference : using the first principles dictated by Ayurveda    Ayurveda teaches us that hair that is curly generally tends to be drier than straight hair. Also, people where vata dosha is dominant tend to have drier hair, scalps and skin. It also helps balance excess Pitta in the body as a whole, and brings better health to the body. This is an Ayurvedic practice that should be re-adopted by everyone for better health.        How is the Krya Classic hair oil different from other hair oils in the market? Why is it good for my hair?    Almost all hair oils commonly available in the market are made using Light Liquid Paraffin, hexane extracted base oils and synthetic herb extracts (if claimed). They also use synthetic colours and perfumes and often synthetic silicones that coat the hair masking hair damage.
