A solar PV water pumping system – commonly known as a solar pump – draws power from solar cell / modules to operate a motor pump set. Solar power pumps use specially developed and energy efficient motor pump sets to achieve higher discharge which off sets the high initial cost. A solar PV water pumping system consists of a number of solar PV modules connected in series – parallel combination to generate sufficient power to operate a motor pump. The solar PV modules are mounted on a metal frame in a manner that the mounting frame can be turned / tilted to ensure that the modules keep facing the sun throughout the day. The system does not have any storage battery since power generated is used directly then and there. The SPV array converts the solar energy into electricity which is used for running the motor pump set. The pumping system can draw water from the open well / bore well or stream / pond or canal. A photovoltaic solar powered pump system has three parts Motor & Pump Controller Solar panels The solar panels generate the power and make motor rotation though the controller. The size of the PV-system is directly dependent on the size of the motor & pump, the amount of water that is required (m3d) and the solar irradiance available. The controller is the heart of the system, it has got the provision of dual input power i.e Solar & electricity (1 3 phase). The controller prefers to run solar power mostly, EB power considered during the absence of sun. If the customer prefer only day time running the EB power may put off. Based on the sun ration level the controller sense the module voltage and makes the motor to rotate, accordingly the same will start from 7.30 am onwards and run till 5.30 am (the timing varies base on the geographic of the site) with our any manual intervention. The controller is twofold. Firstly, it matches the output power that the pump receives with the input power available from the solar panels. Secondly, a controller usually provides a low voltage protection, whereby the system is switched off, if the voltage is too low or too high for the operating voltage range of the pump. This increases the lifetime of the pump thus reducing the need for maintenance. Voltage of the solar pump motors can be AC (alternating current) or DC (direct current). Direct current motors are used for small to medium applications up to about 2-3 HP rating, and are suitable for applications such as garden fountains, landscaping, drinking water for livestock, or small irrigation projects. However, the range of AC pumps are more, reliable & the backup support available across the county. The selection of the pump is based on the site condition like depth of the borewell & water requirement
