Skiving is one of the important preparatory operations carried out in the fabrication of leather goods. Skiving is also known as “paring” in leather goods terminology. Skiving operation is done mainly to reduce the thickness of the cut components of the leather material mostly at the edges to varying width in different ways to suit the methods of construction, in the manufacture of leather goods. Except in cut edge construction, in all other fabrication work, skiving is invariably done. Skiving is necessary for fancy leather goods making. It is performed by machine in modern factories, machines of the cylindrical knife type being the most popular. For some classes of leather goods the reduction of leather substance by the machine alone is sufficient for the subsequent assembling processes. In other grades of articles the machine operation is followed by hand skiving. Knife is used to effect the future reduction necessary for turning over rounded corners, and for touching up the machine pared parts. The feather edging and fine edging of the leathers are usually carried out with the hand knife. When correctly adjusted and operated, the skiving machine produces a very uniform reduction of substance. Hard and thick leathers can be as evenly pared as those of soft texture, and the reduction of large areas is performed more satisfactorily and with less risk of damage then with hand knife. As a labor saving appliance, the machine is remarkable; a time factor of roughly 90 percent for straight forward skiving is in favor of the machine as compared with the hand process.

Band knives are a flat length of narrow steel you would mount onto a band-style cutting machine to slice, slit, or score material. A band knife’s cutting edge is designed to slice through material leaving minimal waste in the process.Band Knife blades are used on two types of machine (vertical and horizontal) depending on the material being cut.On a vertical band knife machine usually a narrow width band knife blade is used, the most common width being 10 mm. The length of the band knife blade depends on the supplier of the band knife machine. The dimensions are indicated on a small metal tag pasted or riveted on the machine. The vertical machine band knife blade is most commonly a "double bevel, double edge DBDE" execution to enable cutting while advancing the table and also while retracting the work table, while as the "double bevel, single edge DBSE" execution cuts only in one direction. Productivity is enhanced when the operator cuts both while advancing and also while retracting the work table after adjusting the foam block after each pass for cutting. The DBDE execution blade can have a parallel or twisted 180 degrees welding. The twisted welding execution saves a grinding unit, as both edges pass the same grinding unit after two turns. It has been observed that a narrow width on a vertical band knife machine gives better dimensional accuracies on the foam block. The wider the vertical machine band knife - more the deflection and size variation from one end to the other extreme end.Horizontal band knife blades are wider usually 30-60 mm wide for foam converting is popular, for leather goods 40-50 mm wide blade is popular, 85-110 mm width is popular for the tannery splitting band knife. There are other widths depending on the machine manufacturer. The horizontal machine band knife blade is supported by a guide to give dimensional accuracies while cutting/splitting. Therefore, only blades that have passed as one main manufacturing step a surface grinding process reach the necessary thickness tolerances of less than 0.02 mm. A higher tolerance would lead to marks on the surface of the split material like leather or rubber. Blades are available in different grades of exactness depending on the required exactness on the material to be cut/split.   Doctor Blades are manufactured in a wide range of sizes and shapes.  Steel blades can range from .004” (0.10mm) to .010” (0.25mm) in thickness.  They can also have special shapes to fit the application.  The most used shape in both gravure and flexo is called a lamella tip.  This tip is a reduced step area that is typically .060” (1.4mm) wide and is usually ½ of the base metal thickness.  A typical blade that is widely used is .006” (0.15mm) thick with a .003” (0.075mm) thick lamella (reduced step).  The lamella (reduced step) allows the doctor blade to meter very fine ink cells without leaving any ink in the areas of the cylinder that are not designed to print. a diamond grinding cup wheel is a metal-bonded diamond tool with diamond segments welded or cold-pressed on a steel (or other metal, such as aluminum) wheel body, which usually looks like a cup. diamond grinding cup wheels are usually mounted on concrete grinders to grind abrasive building materials like concrete, granite and marble. there are various styles and specifications of diamond grinding cup wheels to fit various application requirements. the ones with many big diamond segments can undertake heavy workloads, for example, grinding concrete and stone, while those with small or sparse diamond segments are normally used for fast removal of paints, wallpapers, glues, epoxy and other surface coatings. just like other metal-bonded diamond tools, the diamond segments on diamond grinding cup wheels can have different bonds, different diamond grits, different diamond quality and different diamond concentrations to fit different uses. for example, if the material to be ground is hard, the bond should be softer, and if the material is relatively soft, the bond should be harder. diamond grinding cup wheels are used in different-roughness grindings. for coarse grinding, the bond should be softer and the diamonds' quality should be higher, because in this case the diamonds become blunt more easily. the diamond grit should be bigger, normally from 35 grit to 50 grit. for this is coarse grinding and big grit can improve working efficiency. the diamond concentration can be lower. for fine grinding (sometimes called "polishing"), the bond should be harder and the diamonds' quality can be lower, as in this case the diamonds can last longer and a hard bond can also help the precision of the process. the diamond grit is normally between 80 grit and 120 grit, depending on the grinding requirements. the diamond concentration should be higher. after being ground, the material can be further polished with resin-bonded diamond polishing pads of different diamond grits.

pink fused alumina is white fused alumina with chrome oxide (under 0.5% cr2o3) has been added in the fusion process to produce a grain that is slightly tougher than regular white fused alumina used for grinding unhardened high alloy steels. If more chrome oxide (about 3% cr2o3) has been added to, it will get ruby fused alumina, which provides additional toughness over pink fused alumina. the raw material and refining work of pink aluminum oxide are basically the same as white aluminum oxide. They are both needed to add cr203 and well mixed to be refined as abrasives with rose red color. Its hardness is close to white corundum, and the roughness is higher than white aluminum oxide.
