The principle of detection involved is the Capacitance phenomenon, which is developed between the probe and the reference. The amount of capacitance developed in any vessel is determined by the size (surface area) of the probe, the distance from the probe to its ground reference, and the dielectric constant of the medium being measured. The amount of capacitance developed in a vessel becomes dependent upon the amount of the probe, which is covered with media. As the media rises and falls in the tank, the amount of capacitance developed between the probe and the ground reference also rises and falls. This change in capacitance is detected by employing Radio Frequency (RF) and converted to a digital waveform proportional to the change in level which in turn is used for level detection and monitoring.

A high frequency sine-wave is applied between the probe and the vessel wall.A change of the medium level will induce a change in the current of the applied sine-wave. From Z=Y2fc, when the capacitance in the vessel increase, Impedance will decrease and current will Increase. This capacitor switch, depending on the load pattern, will close or open automatically and connect or disconnect the capacitor bank to the lines. The capacitor switch provides not only reactive power compensation at overload current, but also prevents over-voltage problem at the receiving end during light load conditions by switching "on" and "off" the capacitor bank in the circuit respectively. Features of Capacitor Switch: Automatic switching -on of the capacitor bank whenever the load current exceeds a re-set value. The setting of load current is adjustable upto 150 amps, continuously. An on time delay of 5 minutes is provided each time the capacitor is required to be connected. The capacitor bank is automatically disconnected if the line current is reduced below a specified level. Automatic switching off the capacitor bank whenever the control voltage is beyond the minimum and maximum limits. i.e. 240 volts -15 % to 10%. In the event of line current exceeding a certain specified limit, the CT mounted on Y phase operates through the control unit and closing command is given to the closing solenoid which closes the interrupter, thereby connecting the capacitor bank in the circuit and thus improving the power factor. When line current is reduced, to a specified value control, unit gives a tripping command to the trip coil thereby disconnecting the capacitor bank. The power to the closing solenoid and tripping coil is also taken from the control transformer secondary.

Electronet series LCS-02 are Capacitance Type Level Switches. The vessel wall & probe forms two electrodes. If the vessel is of non-conductive material, the probe will be double rod type. The distance between the electrodes and surface area of the electrodes remains unchanged. The variable is the depth of the material being measured which represents the dielectric constant between two electrodes. Air and vacuum have relative dielectric constant as 1 and that of liquids is greater than 1. The capacitance of the capacitor therefore depends on how much material lies between the probe and vessel wall i.e. whether the probe is covered with or free from material. The capacitance changes with change in level of the material & provides switching output at the desired preset level.
