Frankincense has always been prized as an incense material. It was one of the three gifts brought to the baby Jesus and is used around the world in religious practice and ceremony. To obtain the resin, the tree is slashed to make an incision, causing the tree to exude an opaque, whitish-yellowish resin that forms into pear-shaped tears that, when hardened, can be collected. The tears are graded, with the whitest being the most prized. The essential oil is distilled from the crude gum. Several varieties of frankincense are used for essential oil production, but the properties usually attributed to frankincense in aromatherapy are from the species Boswellia carterii and Boswellia sacra.
