In metal cutting operation ninety-seven percent of the energy consumed is converted into heat. If the right kind of cooling doesn’t take place at the cutting edge, the heat can damage both the cutting tool and the work piece as an overheated tool loses its hardness, which shortens the tool life, and an overheated work piece can lose its dimensional integrity. To cool the cutting tool and work piece at the cutting zone continuously; metal working lubricants, coolants and fluids are used. These fluids improve the tool life by reducing wear, increase lubrication, reduce work piece thermal deformation, provide excellent surface finish and flush away chips from the cutting zone. These products are also used to prevent rust and corrosion. This however, is a misnomer because they are not really soluble in water but form an emulsion when added to water. These emulsifiable oils are mineral oil based concentrates, which contain emulsifiers that allow them to mix with water and form a milky white emulsion. They also contain additives to improve their lubricating properties, rust and corrosion inhibitors and a biocide to help control foul smell.There are several advantages of water emulsifiable oils, viz.: good cooling, low viscosity and thus adequate wetting abilities, non-flammable and nontoxic, easy to clean from small chips and wear particles using standard filters, relatively low initial and disposal cost. These oils are the most popular cutting fluids in use today, because they combine the lubricating qualities of oil with the cooling properties of water and can be used in a wide range of both machining and grinding operations.

PAL SYNCO-300, 400 These are premium class of synthetic fluids based on combination of Ethylene & Propylene Oxide & provides both hydro dynamic & extreme pressure lubrication. At ambient temperature these are completely water soluble & at elevated temperatures these exhibits inverse solubility & are thus able to provide excellent lubricity at low concentration in water. These fluids do not undergo bacterial degradation & leave objectionable odour. Further these fluids prevent the build-up of tacky or gummy residue & thus provides long term trouble free service in recirculating central cooling systems. PAL SYNCO - 300 is especially recommended for machining & grinding operations where it provides extremely smooth surface finish PAL SYNCO – 400is recommended for machining & cutting operations of steel & nickel chrome steel. Not recommended for the machining of non-ferrous metals. Dilution ratio with water varies between 4%-5% depending upon the operation and product handled. Concentrated mixture may lead to paint peel off in the machines and some discoluration of the operator’s skin. Coolant should be used only in clean circulating system.

The oils must always be added to the water. Never add the water to the oil. Usually one part oil is stirred into four parts water. Adding water to this mixture then makes the desired dilution. Oil should never be added directly to the existing emulsion. For best emulsion stability, rust and bacterial growth protection, low hardness water should be used to prepare emulsions. It is important that the correct oil-water proportions be maintained in service.Evaporation in the water, which is espacially rapid inmachining operations that developed high temperatures, may enrich the emulsion excessively. Conversely, finely divided prticles carried away by the emulsion may, when filtered out, remove more oil form the emulsion than water and thus make the emulsion leaner. Oil concentration should be checked at any time. With the oil separated from the water, its concentration can easily be observed and corrected as necessary by adding an emulsion with definite concentration. Avoid strong suitable oils below freezing temperatures. If freezing should occur, re-warm to room temperature and mix product well before using.
