Water is one of the most abundant natural elements. It is also one of the most contaminated ones. A number of minerals dissolve into water. They have to be removed from the raw water before it can be used for any industrial application. A demineraliser removes these minerals from the raw water by an ion- exchange process. This process first exchanges the cations of the salts for the hydrogen ions and, then exchanges the anions of the salts for the hydroxy ions. "MAC" water demineralisers employ the modern on- exchange technology to give you chemically pure water. In these days Softening of Water is almost exclusively effected by Ion Exchangers. In this process the calcium and magnesium ions are exchanged by sodium ions, so that the hardness forming components are converted into sodium sodium salts. Softening is carried out by simple filtration through the exchange material. When the exchange material is exhausted, it requires regeneration. The calcium and magnesium ions which were taken up before are then displaced by sodium ions and flow out together with the regeneration water. The capacities between regeneration and quality of treated water will however vary according to the raw water.

Deionizers (DI) remove both cations and anions, releasing hydrogen ions (H+) in exchange for the former, and hydroxyl ions (OH-) for the latter. The hydrogen and hydroxyl ions subsequently combine to form pure water. Deionizers are most commonly used when ionic contamination is such that reverse osmosis alone cannot be relied upon to produce water of acceptable quality. The impurity ions are taken up by the resin, which must be periodically regenerated to restore it to the original ionic form. (An ion is an atom or group of atoms with an electric charge. Positively-charged ions are called cations and are usually metals; negatively-charged ions are called anions and are usually non-metals).In mixed-bed deionizers the cation-exchange and anion-exchange resins are intimately mixed and contained in a single pressure vessel. The thorough mixture of cation-exchangers and anion-exchangers in a single column makes a mixed-bed deionizer equivalent to a lengthy series of two-bed plants. As a result, the water quality obtained from a mixed-bed deionizer is appreciably higher than that produced by a two-bed plant.
