Example : A 10 HP Motor is connected to a 3-phase 440 V (phase to phase 440V, phase to neutral 230V) supply with a fuse of 30 Amps. Now assume that an exposed wire touches the frame of the motor that is connected to a grounding system, which has 20 ohm resistance to earth. By Ohms Law the fault current developed would be BOY (phase to neutral)/ 20 Ohms= 11.5 Amps, and this fault current flows from the motor conductor to the earth. Since the fault current is 11.5 Amps against the fuse provided of 30 Amps, the fuse would not blow. If a person happens to touch the motor frame, he could be subjected to heavy electric shock of 230Volts to ground. as the fault current takes the path of least resistance, viz. through the person In this case, causing shock, bum Injuries and finally death due to cardiac arrest. If however, the earth resistance is kept less than I Ohm, the fuse would blow for the fault current of 230W I Ohm = 230 Amps. By keeping the earth resistance value close to 1.0 Ohm, the entire electric system would be healthy. In a 230 V system 30 mA current Is sufficient to cause instantaneous death.
