Tool Steels M2________________________________________Availability Tool Steels M2 is stocked by 30 North American distributors and produced by 13 large mills. Distributors will offer small quantity buys while mills will generally only sell large quantities, with delivery times anywhere from 10 to 50 weeks depending on size and form required This material is stocked primarily in Bar Products by 26 distributors but is also available to a lesser extent in Flat Rolled Products, Wire Products, and Shapes. ________________________________________ Chemistry Data : [top] Carbon 0.78 - 1.05 Chromium 3.75 - 4.5 Iron Balance Manganese 0.15 - 0.4 Molybdenum 4.5 - 5.5 Phosphorus 0.03 max Silicon 0.2 - 0.45 Sulphur 0.03 max Tungsten 5.5 - 6.75 Vanadium 1.75 - 2.2 ________________________________________ Principal Design Features M2 is a higher carbon version of the M1 tool steel (Molybdenum High Speed Tool Steel). The M2 alloy has somewhat better wear resistance than M1. ________________________________________ Applications Primarily used for cutting tools. ________________________________________ Machinability M2 is classified as a "medium" machinability tool steel in the annealed condition. It may be shaped by grinding but is relatively poor in regard to capability of being ground. Its machinability rating is 50% as compared to the W group water hardening tool steels which are relatively easily machined. ________________________________________ Forming Formed by machining or forging and then machining. ________________________________________ Welding Consult the alloy supplier for information on the advisability of welding. ________________________________________ Heat Treatment Preheat at 1450 F before heating for hardening. Then heat rapidly from 1450 F to 2200 F and hold for 3 to 5 minutes followed by quenching in oil, air or salt bath. ________________________________________ Forging Forge at 20

HSS GRADES: MOLYBDENUM GRADES: M2, M3/2, M4, M35, M42TUNGESTEN GRADES: T1, T4, T5, T15, T42 Sizes & Ranges of above HSS mentioned grades: ROUND DIA Small Dia 20mm to 63 mm Medium Dia: 65 mm to 160 mm Large Dia: 165mm to 350 mm FLATS: (W) 10mm – 250mm to (H) 20mm – 100mm x Length (meters) INTRODUCTION OF HSS In today’s World - for modern industrial production, particularly on mechanical & CNC mass production, tooling is one of the key factors pertaining for the performance of shaping and forming processes. Almost all tools employed for this purpose are made from high speed steels. The use of high speed steels has also gained increasing importance for chipless shaping, eg. for extrusion, blanking and punching tools. HSS chemical composition distinctly differentiates between W-, Mo- and W-Mo alloyed steel grades, which contain different amounts of carbon, vanadium and cobalt elements to strengthen its own occurrence. Characteristic properties HSS GRADES working hardness High wear resistance High retention of hardness and red hardness Excellent toughness STEEL PROPERTIES Standard grade for High Speed Steels; owing to its balanced composition has good toughness and cutting performance, hence many applications. HSS Containing cobalt content is a high performance steel with good cutting capability & ensures high red hardness and tempering retention. It is particularly suitable in thermal stress situations and for intermittent cutting. High Speed Steel with high molybdenum and carbon. It has high wear resistance, high red hardness and good toughness. With its low vanadium content, this grade has very good grind ability APPLICATIONS High performance Gear Cutting Hobs, Shapers, Milling cutters, Bevel tools, of all kinds of highly stressed twist bits and taps, shaped shear blades, for working high strength materials, broaches. Cutting tools for roughing or finishing, such as: helical bits, milling cutters of all types, taps, dies, spindles, reamers, thread rolling tools, drill bits, circular saw segments. Impact tools and those used for working wood. Cold forming tools such as dies and punches for cold extrusion and cutting and fine cutting tools.

high speed steel (commonly abbreviated to hss) is a material usually used in the manufacture of machine tool bits and other cutters. It is often used in power saw blades and drill bits. It is superior to the older high carbon steel tools used extensively through the 1940s in that it can withstand higher temperatures without losing its temper (hardness). This property allows hss to cut faster than high carbon steel, hence the name high speed steel. At room temperature hss and high carbon steel have an equivalent hardness; only at elevated temperatures does hss become advantageous. applications: the main use of high speed steels continues to be in the manufacture of various cutting tools, drills, taps, milling cutters, tool bits, gear cutters, saw blades, etc., although usage for punches and dies is increasing.the characteristic properties of all high speed steels grades include. aisi m2 aisi m4 aisi m35 aisi m42 aisi t1 aisi t4 aisi t5 aisi t15 aisi t-42
