Aditya Birla group owns a large Caustic Soda plant in Nagda, M.P. This plant, like most other chlor-alkali plants have an abundance of “wasteby-product” Hydrogen which is either sold in the market at very low rates or simply flared or burnt in the boiler. Hence, Idea Cellular decided to tap into this company’s resource and solve the dilemma of regular supply of Hydrogen and that too at compelling prices.

This is easily achieved using good quality down stream gas pressure regulating valves. It is recommended to use a well designed valve, and never think an ordinary air pressure regulator will, do a reliable job. TGs which have within loop Hydrogen Dryer are the lucky ones. They at least have the technical facility to keep Hydrogen Dew point in check. Many Power Utilities are using commercially available Hydrogen gas supplied in Gas cylinders or Bullets. Commercial Hydrogen is typically procured from the off-gas stream of process industries such as Chlor-Alkali plants. This Commercial grade Hydrogen of 99.8% purity (or worse), and questionable Dew point is wet (saturated). Ensuing wet gas affects the Generator winding life. One needs superior quality gas to keep the Dew point low. Just like, you need clean water, to wash dirty clothes. Either this be done by online Hydrogen dryer or use Hydrogen gas of superior Dew point (-) 60°C or better, and successfully use the ‘displacement method’ to control purge atmosphere Dew point.

A refrigerated air dryer is the most commonly used type of compressed air dryer Gas Dryer for most plant applications for the drying of plant air and other utility gases like Seal gas, hydrogen gas for generator cooling, nitrogen Gas drying etc. where a dew point of +2°C at line pressure i.e. (-)22°C at atmospheric pressure is an acceptable norm.
