Soap nuts are probably the most sustainable cleaning product on the market. They are an all-natural, plant-based product, easy to grow organic and require very little packaging. They are naturally hypoallergenic, odorless and do no damage to surfaces or fabrics. And there are countless ideas on how to use them, making them sustainable and versatile. The soap nut comes from the Soapnut Tree (Sapindus mukorossi). The trees produce the small black berry, approximately one inch (2-2.5 cm) in diameter, that are deseeded and the shell is dried prior to use. The shells used for detergent contain something called saponin, which works as a natural surfactant. Surfactants reduce the surface tension of the water, essentially making it wetter and easier to penetrate into soiled fabrics. This combined with the agitation of your machine or handwashing removes the dirt or particles, then keeps them away from your clothing until rinsing occurs. Most commercial detergents contain chemical surfactants, some of which (such as 1,2- Dioxane) have been shown to be carcinogenic and volatile. But soap nuts are all-natural and have been used for centuries around the The Benefits of Soap Nuts If you're not yet convinced of their benefits or how to use soap nuts, the following information should answer some of your questions: Sustainable: It's a renewable resource, easily grown organically. HOW DO SOAP NUTS “WORK”?The inside of the soap nut contains a natural chemical called saponin that is a surfactant (cleaner)! When you heat and soak a soap nut, the saponin is released and cleaning begins! They are effective at removing soil and odors and also leave fabrics soft! They work great at cleaning, but don’t produce very many suds. Cleaning with them can feel a little counter-intuitive since we have been trained that suds means clean (), but soap nuts have great cleaning power! If you have allergies to commercial products, this is a great alternative to other cleaners since they are fragrance free and WHAT ARE SOAP NUTS?Calling them “nuts” is actually a bit of a misnomer. They are really the dried berries of the Sapindus mukorossi tree (soap berry tree) that grows in the Himalayas. But don’t eat soap nuts. No seriously. They hurt your stomach and are better used as a cleaner than a food. The tree grows and produces fruit in about 9 years.HOW TO USE SOAP NUTS IN LAUNDRY? Place 5-6 soap nuts in a muslin drawstring bag and throw them in the washer before you add your clothes. Wash as usual (cold, warm, or hot) and remove the bag after laundering then dry clothes as you normally would. You can re-use them 4-7 times depending on how hot your water is. Hotter water releases more saponin and will make them degrade faster. You’ll know that they are maxed out when they turn a grayish color and are soft and mushy. Now they are ready for compost! I’ve found that they work a little better in warmer water. For cold water washing, I sometimes soak them in a cup of hot water for a few minutes to start the saturation process and toss the water and nuts into the washer before I add the clothes. Since they are low suds, they are great for HE washers. They are also good for cloth diapers since fabrics remain free of residue and fully absorbent. If you want to add a fragrance to your laundry, you can add a few drops of essential oil to the muslin bag. I like lemon essential oil because it helps break up oil and grease and has a nice fragrance, but it’s up to you! Here is a summary of why I like them: Truly all natural (no dyes, perfumes, chemicals Cost effective (If you buy these soap nuts is works out to about 8 cents a load) Hypoallergenic Low sudsing (good for HE washers) Ideal for cloth diapers Easy to use How to use :-Soap nuts are easy to use. Put the required amount of soap nuts into the small bag provided and tie tightly. Place laundry in the machine with the soap nuts on top and run your normal program At the end of the wash remove the bag of soap nuts and allow to dry. These can be re used. For lightly soiled clothes use 3-5 nuts For Heavily soiled clothes 4-6 nuts For hard water areas you should use 7 nuts Soap Nut Shells are the only organic detergent that grows on trees! It simply doesn't get greener than this! 100% Natural, non-polluting, sustainable, compostable, certified organic and vegan. Great for all allergy sufferers. Palm Oil free. Can be used as an organic laundry detergent(make your own liquid detergent for 30c washes, instructions included). With these Soap nuts you can also make a homemade natural multi-purpose cleaner, natural pesticide, washing up liquid, hand and body wash (instructions included).
