The thermistor temperature sensor is a small thermistor enclosed in a weatherproof housing. It is suitable for measuring air and soil temperatures with a datalogger. The fine-wire thermistor is ideally suited for taking measurements of surfaces or small samples where even a narrow field of view infrared radiometer may not be suitable due to the integration over its conical field of view. The small size also provides a more rapid response to changes in temperature than larger sensors. The sensor is rugged and can be repeatedly pushed into plant tissues with tweezers. The needles are welded to the body and will not break. MPM160 is especially designed for use with MP406 Moisture Probe. It provides the power to the MP406 Moisture Probe for the reading, display and storage of MP406 measurements. The reading number, mV and Volumetric Soil Water Content (VSW%) are displayed directly. MPExt Rod chrome extension rods are a pair. Each rod is 35 cm long enabling measurement of soil moisture to 70 cm depth in the soil profile. One connects to the MP406 and the other has a "T" handle. MP Case is made of high quality aluminium with strong foam cutout. The case carries the MP406, MPM160 and MPExt Rod. MP Auger Set (optional) consists of a spiral drill bit and T handle. Utilising the Heat Ratio Method (HRM) principle the Sap Flow Meter is able to measure both high and low flow rates in both small woody stems & roots as well as large trees. Like the Heat Field Deformation (HFD) principle the HRM Sap Flow Meter is the only instrument that can measure zero flow and reverse sap flow rates. Making it the most powerful and flexible instrument for the direct measurement of plant water use. Heat Ratio Method (HRM) is an improvement of the Compensation Heat Pulse Method (CHPM). Being a modified heat pulse technique power consumption is very low using approx 70 m Amp per day at a 10 minute temporal sampling interval under average transpiration rates. The HRM needles have two radial measurement points for the charaterisation of radial sap flow gradients making measurements more accurate. Through microprocessor control, the inner measurement point can be activated or deactivated dependent on the specific wood anatomy of the species being measured. This provides a great flexibility in stem diameter range from >10 mm diameter woody stems or roots to the world's largest Redwood trees.
