The treatment consists of phases fill, react, settle, and release. In the system the reaction tank is filled with raw wastewater. During the fill phase and the following react phase, the wastewater is treated biologically. After the biological treatment a settling phase is initiated. Post sedimentation the treated water is discharged from the system before the entering of new batch of waste water. In Eco SBR system the reaction tank can perform both nitrification and denitrification resulting in a complete elimination of internal recirculation and extraneous clarifier.

Its prime applications are in the domestic sector and small-scale industries, but it is also becoming popular in modern systems for combined heat and power generation.
