Air-Tech’s Ammonia Cracking Unit generates combination of Nitrogen and Hydrogen which is used in Heat Treatment Furnaces. Cracking of Ammonia is most economical way for On-site generation of Hydrogen Gas. For this process, the temperature of 850 Deg. C is maintained in the electrically heated furnace. A centrifugally cast retort is installed in the center of this furnace, which is filled with Nickle Catalyst. At this stage the Ammonia cracking takes place in presence of Nickel Catalyst and separates its vital element i.e. 75 % Hydrogen and 25% Nitrogen Gas at Dew Point of (-)30 Deg. C. As Nitrogen Gas is generally inert gas this mixture is treated as pure Hydrogen Gas. This becomes the most economical, tried , trusted and dependable source of on-site Hydrogen generation.For producing super dry gas, Molecular Sieves Filter is given after Ammonia Cracking Unit which reduces ammonia down to 1-ppm level and dries gas upto (-) 70 Deg. Ammonia Crackers produce Cracked Ammonia ( NH3 ) Gas using Anhydrous ammonia from cylinders. Cracked ammonia contains 75% Hydrogen and 25% Nitrogen and the product gas is very dry & oxygen free. In heat treatment furnaces, this gas is widely used in reducing atmosphere. Where ever pure hydrogen is needed, cracked ammonia gas serves as a very cost-effective substitute.

Dry, oil free air at ambient temperature and elevated pressure is passed through vessels (adsorbers) containing molecular sieve. The sieve holds on to (adsorbs) Oxygen molecules in preference to the nitrogen molecules, thus separating nitrogen from air. The oxygen molecules are released (desorbed) from the sieve when the pressure in the adsorber is reduced, thus making the sieve fresh again (regeneration). Two vessels are employed for continuous supply of nitrogen. The entire cycle is microprocessor controlled and no operator attention is required for normal operation.

NH3-Cracker or hydrogen generator is used for the production of forming gas. Hydrogen and Nitrogen are generated in a cost effective way. In a volume ratio of 3 : 1 or in a weight ratio of 14 : 3. Capacities from 1m3/h to 60m3/h are available. Ammonia cracking is a simple and cost effective method of manufacturing hydrogen, however it may be used only in the applications, in which presence of nitrogen is acceptable. The NH3 is coming from bottles or from or bulk tanker. The ammonia gas is pre-heated in a heat exchanger and vaporizer and then cracked in the main furnace unit. The furnace is electrically heated by special LGO heating elements. The decomposition of ammonia gas NH3 takes place at a temperature of 920°C in the presence of a special grade nickel catalyst in an electrically heated furnace. 2 NH3 gives N2 + 3 H2 The cracked gas then passes to the heat exchanger for cooling and for pre-heating the incoming gas. This way and in combination with the low power consuming LGO heating elements, it can be made sure that only a minimum of electricity has to be used for the cracking process. * Ammonia cracking is a process of dissociation (decomposition) of gaseous anhydrous Ammonia (NH3) into a mixture of Hydrogen (H2) and Nitrogen (N2) according to the reaction: 2NH3 = N2 + 3H2 * The reaction is endothemic, requiring 383 kJ/mol. The process is performed at increased temperature within the range 1560-1740ºF (850-950ºC) in the presence of special grade nickel as catalyst. The resulting gas mixture is composed of hydrogen and nitrogen in the proportion 3:1 (75% of H2 and 25% of N2) with very little amount (20 -100 ppm) of residual undissociated ammonia with dew point -60ºF to -20ºF (-51ºC to -29ºC). The gas may be further purified by molecular sieves purifier resulting in reducing the uncracked ammonia to 1-3 ppm with dew point -110ºF (-80ºC). Available Capacities. 0 m3/hour to 60 m3/hour. When Ammonia gas is passed over Nickel catalyst in these units, it cracks to N2 + H2 mixture containing 75% Hydrogen. This mixture is used as Deoxo Purification Unit for Oxygen removal. FOR GETTING PURE HYDROGEN If pure Hydrogen gas of 99.99% purity is required, we provide a PSA Molecular sieves unit after these Ammonia crackers which remove Nitrogen. This PSA unit operates at 7kg/cm²g pressure and produces pure Hydrogen gas at 5.5kg/cm² pressure. This type of Ammonia based hydrogen generator is very economical in initial investment upto 50 Nm³/hr Hydrogen capacity. MOLECULAR SIEVES PURIFIER For reducing residual ammonia content and to get very dry gas, a molecular sieves purifier is provided after ammonia cracking units. This reduces ammonia down to 1-ppm level and dries gas upto (-) 80°C dew point.

Cracked ammonia from furnace is cooled to ambient temperature in a shell &Tube type heat exchanger and having dew point around (-) 30°C. Further product gas is passed through a molecular sieves filled Gas Purifier to achieve a dew point up to (-) 80°C.
