Solid Glasses are ideally suited for frameless glass assemblies, shower screens, stairways and for applications requiring resistance to thermal shock. Solid Glass is available in two variants i.e. Heat Strengthened (HS) and Fully Toughened (FT). Solid Glass (HS) is about two times stronger than annealed glass and is recommended for applications where strength and thermal shock resistance are the only concern. Solid Glass (FT) is four to five times stronger than standard annealed glass. It crumbles into very small fragments in case of glass breakage; which greatly minimises the risk of personal injury. The features of breakage pattern and higher strength in impact make it the ideal 'Safety Glass'.Heat Soaking in Solid Glass: On rare occasions, Solid Glass (FT) shatters due to the presence of microscopic additions of Nickel-Sulphide (NiS). NiS stones, which occasionally and ranadomly form in glass during primary glass manufacturing, become unstable when glass is tempered (limited to return to their stable state while cooling). Over a period, these unstable stones could expand inside the glass due to temperature variation at site, causing the entire glass to break. NiS induced fractures are not observed in Solid Glass (HS). Chances of breakage in Solid Glass (FT) is greatly minimised, if the glasses are heat soak tested after toughening.

Glass is tempered by taking annealed glass and heating it to softening point of approximately 660 degree C. Its structure is then rapidly cooled while the inner core is allowed to cool gradually. This results in layer of high compression on the surface counter balancing by high tension at the center resulting in a glass that is four to five times stronger than annealed glass. Should accidental breakage occur, the resulting fragments are smaller and granular, causing no injury, harmless.

Glass Unit (also known as Double Glazed Unit) is described as two or more lites of glass spaced apart and hermetically sealed to form a double triple glazed unit with an air space between each lite. The most important function of IGU is to improve the thermal performance (reduce the U-value) of glass when used in architectural applications. In addition it also has acoustic benefits. Float glass (also called “flat” glass) that has not been heat-strengthened or tempered is annealed glass. Annealing float glass is the process of controlled cooling to prevent residual stress in the glass and is an inherent operation of the float glass manufacturing process. Annealed glass can be cut, machined, drilled, edged and polished. Heat-Strengthened Glass Heat-strengthened (HS) glass has been subjected to a heating and cooling cycle and is generally twice as strong as annealed glass of the same thickness and configuration. Laminated Glass Laminated glass is two or more lites (pieces) of glass permanently bonded together with one or more plastic interlayers (PVB) using heat and pressure. The glass and interlayers can be a variety of colors and thicknesses designed to meet building code standards and requirements as necessary. Laminated glass can be broken, but the fragments will tend to adhere to the plastic layer and remain largely intact, reducing the risk of injury.  Laminated glass is considered “safety glass” because it can meet the requirements of the various code organizations that set standards for safety. Heat strengthened and tempered glass can be incorporated into laminated glass units to further strengthen the impact resistance. Insulating Glass Insulating glass refers to two or more lites of glass sealed around the edges with an air space between, to form a single unit. Commonly referred to as an “IG unit,” insulating glass is the most effective way to reduce air-to-air heat transfer through the glazing. When used in conjunction with low-E and/or reflective glass coatings, IG units become effective means to conserve energy and comply with energy codes. The most common architectural insulating glass unit configuration is ¼” glass – ½” air space – ¼” glass (6 mm – 12 mm air space – 6 mm).

Annealed glass is the most commonly used architectural glass. It has good surface flatness because it is not heat-treated and therefore not subject to distortion typically produced during glass tempering. On the downside, annealed glass breaks into sharp, dangerous shards. Heat-strengthened and fully-tempered glass are heat-treated glass products, heated and quenched in such a way to create residual surface compression in the glass. The surface compression gives the glass generally higher resistance to breakage than annealed glass. Heat-strengthened glass has at least twice the strength and resistance to breakage from wind loads or thermal stresses comparing to annealed glass. The necessary heat treatment generally results in some distortion compared to annealed glass. Like annealed glass, heat-strengthened glass can break into large shards. Tempered glass is a heat toughened safety glass. It has undergone a special heat treatment to increase its strength and resistance to impact. In fact, tempered glass is approximately five times more resistant than normal glass. If it breaks, fully-tempered glass breaks into many small frag- ments, which makes it suitable as safety glazing under certain conditions.
