Solid Glasses are ideally suited for frameless glass assemblies, shower screens, stairways and for applications requiring resistance to thermal shock. Solid Glass is available in two variants i.e. Heat Strengthened (HS) and Fully Toughened (FT). Solid Glass (HS) is about two times stronger than annealed glass and is recommended for applications where strength and thermal shock resistance are the only concern. Solid Glass (FT) is four to five times stronger than standard annealed glass. It crumbles into very small fragments in case of glass breakage; which greatly minimises the risk of personal injury. The features of breakage pattern and higher strength in impact make it the ideal 'Safety Glass'.Heat Soaking in Solid Glass: On rare occasions, Solid Glass (FT) shatters due to the presence of microscopic additions of Nickel-Sulphide (NiS). NiS stones, which occasionally and ranadomly form in glass during primary glass manufacturing, become unstable when glass is tempered (limited to return to their stable state while cooling). Over a period, these unstable stones could expand inside the glass due to temperature variation at site, causing the entire glass to break. NiS induced fractures are not observed in Solid Glass (HS). Chances of breakage in Solid Glass (FT) is greatly minimised, if the glasses are heat soak tested after toughening.

Glass is tempered by taking annealed glass and heating it to softening point of approximately 660 degree C. Its structure is then rapidly cooled while the inner core is allowed to cool gradually. This results in layer of high compression on the surface counter balancing by high tension at the center resulting in a glass that is four to five times stronger than annealed glass. Should accidental breakage occur, the resulting fragments are smaller and granular, causing no injury, harmless.

Glass Unit (also known as Double Glazed Unit) is described as two or more lites of glass spaced apart and hermetically sealed to form a double triple glazed unit with an air space between each lite. The most important function of IGU is to improve the thermal performance (reduce the U-value) of glass when used in architectural applications. In addition it also has acoustic benefits. We guarantee excellent quality and high precision insulated glass using high performance dual seal insulated glass materials to ensure conformance to global Standards. The air space between the lites is filled with air or inert gas like argon which provides better insulating performance. Typically the aluminium spacer is filled with desicant to prevent condensation and improve insulating performance.

Most glass is a mixture of silica obtained from beds of fine sand or from pulverized sand- stone;an alkali to lower the melting point, usually a form of soda or,for finer glass, potash lime as a stabilizer; and cullet (waste glass) to assist in melting the mixture. The properties of glass are varied by adding other substances, commonly in the form of oxides, e.g., lead, for brilliance and weight; boron, for thermal and electrical resistance; barium, to increase the refractive index, as in optical glass; cerium, to absorb infrared rays; metallic oxides, to impart color; and manganese, for decolorizing.

Float glass (also called “flat” glass) that has not been heat-strengthened or tempered is annealed glass. Annealing float glass is the process of controlled cooling to prevent residual stress in the glass and is an inherent operation of the float glass manufacturing process. Annealed glass can be cut, machined, drilled, edged and polished. Heat-Strengthened Glass Heat-strengthened (HS) glass has been subjected to a heating and cooling cycle and is generally twice as strong as annealed glass of the same thickness and configuration. HS glass must achieve residual surface compression between 3,500 and 7,500 PSI for 6mm glass, according to ASTM C 1048. Please contact Guardian regarding thicker glass standards. HS glass has greater resistance to thermal loads than annealed glass and, when broken, the fragments are typically larger than those of fully tempered glass and initially may remain in the glazing opening. Heat strengthened glass is not a safety glass product as defined by the various code organizations. This type of glass is intended for general glazing, where additional strength is desired to withstand wind load and thermal stress. It does not require the strength of fully tempered glass, and is intended for applications that do not specifically require a safety glass product. HS glass cannot be cut or drilled after heat-strengthening and any alterations, such as edge-grinding, sandblasting or acid-etching, can cause premature failure. Tempered Glass Fully tempered glass is approximately four times stronger than annealed glass of the same thickness and configuration, and residual surface compression must be over 10,000 PSI for 6mm, according to ASTM C 1048. Please contact Guardian for thicker glass standards. When broken, it will break into many relatively small fragments, which are less likely to cause serious injury. Tempered glass is often referred to as “safety glass” because it meets the requirements of the various code organizations that set standards for safety glass. This type of glass is intended for general glazing, and safety glazing such as sliding doors, storm doors, building entrances, bath and shower enclosures, interior partitions and other uses requiring superior strength and safety properties. Tempered glass cannot be cut or drilled after tempering, and any alterations, such as edge-grinding, sandblasting or acid-etching, can cause premature failure. Laminated Glass Laminated glass is two or more lites (pieces) of glass permanently bonded together with one or more plastic interlayers (PVB) using heat and pressure. The glass and interlayers can be a variety of colors and thicknesses designed to meet building code standards and requirements as necessary. Laminated glass can be broken, but the fragments will tend to adhere to the plastic layer and remain largely intact, reducing the risk of injury. Laminated glass is considered “safety glass” because it can meet the requirements of the various code organizations that set standards for safety. Heat strengthened and tempered glass can be incorporated into laminated glass units to further strengthen the impact resistance. Insulating Glass Insulating glass refers to two or more lites of glass sealed around the edges with an air space between, to form a single unit. Commonly referred to as an “IG unit,” insulating glass is the most effective way to reduce air-to-air heat transfer through the glazing. When used in conjunction with low-E and/or reflective glass coatings, IG units become effective means to conserve energy and comply with energy codes. The most common architectural insulating glass unit configuration is ¼” glass – ½” air space – ¼” glass (6 mm – 12 mm air space – 6 mm).

Annealed glass is the most commonly used architectural glass. It has good surface flatness because it is not heat-treated and therefore not subject to distortion typically produced during glass tempering. On the downside, annealed glass breaks into sharp, dangerous shards. Heat-strengthened and fully-tempered glass are heat-treated glass products, heated and quenched in such a way to create residual surface compression in the glass. The surface compression gives the glass generally higher resistance to breakage than annealed glass. Heat-strengthened glass has at least twice the strength and resistance to breakage from wind loads or thermal stresses comparing to annealed glass. The necessary heat treatment generally results in some distortion compared to annealed glass. Like annealed glass, heat-strengthened glass can break into large shards. Tempered glass is a heat toughened safety glass. It has undergone a special heat treatment to increase its strength and resistance to impact. In fact, tempered glass is approximately five times more resistant than normal glass. As an example, a piece of 8mm tempered glass will be able to withstand a steel ball weighing 500g dropped from a height of 2 meters.Features: 1. 5 times harder than ordinary float glass, stronger resistance to thermal breakage than annealed or heat strengthened glass.2. Once breakage occurs, the glass disintegrates into small cubical fragments, which are relatively harmless to human body.3. It withstands abrupt temperature change of 220 Centigrade.4. Sizes are produced as per customer request. Once tempered, it can not be cut down. Usage: Window glass; Door glass; Curtain wall glass; Fencing glass in buildings, hotels, etc. Fully-tempered glass (toughened glass) Provides at least four times the strength of annealed glass, which gives it superior resistance to glass break- age. It is float or plate glass that has been heated and rapidly cooled, increasing its inher- ent strength and ductility. Similar to heat-strengthened glass, the heat-treatment generally results in some distortion. If it breaks, fully-tempered glass breaks into many small frag- ments, which makes it suitable as safety glazing under certain conditions. It is used for windows that are exposed to high wind pressure or extreme heat or cold.
