PCB-mounted and pigtailed devices, such as LEDs, lasers and receivers, often need to be connected to an optical backplane that is hard to reach, requiring labor and system downtime. The widely field-deployed BSC and BSCII optical backplane connector systems integrate the standard SC with a blind-mating PCB mountable connector, through a custom optical backplane adapter. The blind-mating interface provides the daughtercard with a plug-in feature that allows the card to be inserted or exchanged without disrupting the inputoutput ports or their associated cabling. Mismating of connectors can lead to damage and poor signal integrity. This system is designed with generous ferrule float in order to compensate for the imprecision of the card cages. Telecommunications and networking systems are continually developing and require frequent upgrades, which can be costly and labor intensive. If additional density is required, the connector may be gang mounted. The BSCII optical connector is backwards compatible with the original BSC. For multiple fiber applications, alignment pins in the housing allow the connectors to be stacked. SC adapters can present a risk to eye safety and are sensitive to dust contamination. In addition to the traditional SC style adapter, a shuttered SC version, which shields against laser exposure and dust contamination, is also available.
