The envelope containing Bionova® BT50 Spore Strip is specifically designed to control steam 121 ºC to 134 ºC (Steam) and formaldehyde (Form) sterilization processes. Spore strips should be incubated in Bionova® MC20 or MC1020 growth medium tube or in appropiate growth medium for Geobacillus stearothermophilus ATCC 7953 growth. If the sterilization process was not successful, MC20 or MC1020 growth medium will turn to yellow after incubation @ 60±2 ºC, thus indicating the existence of living Geobacillus stearothermophilus spores on the strips. If the sterilization process was successful, MC20 or MC1020 indicating medium will remain its original color. A final readout should therefore be performed after 24 hours of growth medium incubation @ 60±2 ºC for steam sterilization processes control, or 48 hours@ 60±2 ºC for formaldehyde sterilization processes control.

It contains bacterial spores on a paper carrier packaged within a small, thermoplastic culture tube. Inside the thermoplastic culture tube is a sealed glass ampoule of specially formulated soybean casein digest culture medium containing a color indicator which turns a dramatic yellow when spores grow. The our self-contained biological indicator is easy-to-use and produces visual results within 48 hours without laboratory transfers. Simply place the biological indicator inside products or product packages to be sterilized. The inoculated package is then placed in the sterilizer and processed. Upon removal from the sterilizer, the biological indicator is activated. Using a crushing device, flex the sides of the soft plastic culture tube, break the glass ampoule allowing the medium to mix with the spores. The activated biological indicator is then placed in an appropriate incubator for 24 hours (steam) or 48 hours (ETO). If any spores survive the process, the medium will turn yellow.
