The disordered structure of this glass gives the material moderate hydraulic cementitious properties when very finely ground into granulated blast furnace slag, but if it can access free lime, the granulated blast furnace slag develops strong hydraulic cementitious properties.

Blast Furnace Slag is a by-product from the manufacturing of steel in a blast furnace. Initially in its molten form, it is diverted to a granulator where it is quenched with water and rapidly cooled to form glassy, non-metallic granules which are silicates and aluminosilicates of calcium. These granules are dried to produce Granulated Blast Furnace Slag (GBFS).Due to stringent quality control in the steel production process, the chemical composition of its by-product GBFS is highly stable. Regular checks are carried out on the granulate to monitor the amount of glass produced as a control on the effectiveness of the quenching process. GBFS is light in color, around 3mm down to dust in size and has a relatively high moisture content. The material is allowed to drain by stocking in heaps for sufficient time.GBFS is ground to a suitable fineness to produce Ground Granulated Blast Furnace Slag (GGBFS), which is used as a cementitious material in concrete to enhance long-term performance and durability characteristics while reducing life-cycle and maintenance costs. With the poor quality, contamination (silt, clay, etc.) and depletion of natural sand, as well as significant negative environmental impact of crushed sand (rockgranite), GBFS has found its way as an effective replacement of natural sand crushed sand in concrete as a fine aggregate. Advantages include reduction of cement content, higher reactive silica and negligible silt content, improved strength, reduced permeability and chemical attacks, increased durability, lower shrinkage cracks, better cohesiveness and workability, improved bonding and smoother finish.

The Ground Granulated Blast Furnace Slag (GGBSGGBFS) is a type of eco-friendly green building material and high quality secondary cementitious material for concrete and cement. It is recognized as one of the best secondary cementations material for building high durable concrete stricture in the world today! GGBS has taken over top place of high performance cement and concrete mineral additives with its unique characteristics of hydration, low-price raw material. GGBS is obtained by quenching molten iron blast furnace slag (a by- product of iron and steel making) in water or steam. It is then further grounded into the desired fineness in terms of the required particle size distribution. The main components of blast furnace slag are CaO (30-50%), SiO2 (28-38%), Al2O3 (8-24%), and MgO (1-18%). The other important aspect of GGBS is its superiority in concrete durability which extends the lifespan of buildings from fifty years to a hundred years.

Mini Blast Furnace (MBF): A Blast furnace of working volume 350 M3 designed by MECON Ltd. to produce 3,00,000 MT annum of basic grade hot metal has been installed and sucessfully commissioned. The hot metal is mainly used in the steel melting shop as a raw material and surplus hot metal poured in pig casting machine. The Pig casting machine is designed by KBS Paramount & capacity 800 Tonnes per day (TPD). The Blast furnace gas is used for stoves heating, heating of preheating furnace of bar and section mill, heating of boiler ,sinter plant. Slag which is a byproduct is mainly sold to cement plants.

For production of hot metal, the unit has installed a blast furnace. In the blast furnace, the burden of iron ore and coke is reduced into hot metal. Coke is used both as reductant and fuel. To maintain heat in the furnace a stove has been set up. A blast furnace of 262 Cu M has also been set up. The production per Cu M is 2.40 tons per day. Considering 340 working days per annum, the installed capacity of the plant is 214,000 TPA. The hot metal produced shall be transferred to Electric Arc Furnace for primary refining or cast in pig casting machine.
