The Buchholz Relay is one of the essential protective devices to protect equipment such as the transformer, capacitors, on-load tap changers, etc. It detects abnormal working of the components inside the equipment and consequently minimizes the spread of any damage to the equipment active part by disconnecting faulty apparatus before large-scale damage occurs to the apparatus or other connected apparatus.

Castings treated against porosity through a special process. Unique internal design of 'housing' prevents false air traps on top of the relay. Well designed internal layout gives clear view of colour of gas inside the relay through glass window for fault analysis. Bucket type float design with inherent ability to withstand vacuumtreatment of transformers. Built in test facility for checking continuity of both Alarmand Trip circuits. Anti-vibration custom built mercury switches give high stability against mechanical shocks and vibrations. Generation of electrical power in low voltage level is very much cost effective. Theoretically, this low voltage level power can be transmitted to the receiving end. This low voltage power if transmitted results in greater line current which indeed cause more line losses. But if the voltage level of a power is increased, the current of the power is reduced which causes reduction in ohmic or I2R losses in the system, reduction in cross sectional area of the conductor i.e. reduction in capital cost of the system and it also improves the voltage regulation of the system. Because of these, low level power must be stepped up for efficient electrical power transmission. This is done by step up transformer at the sending side of the power system network. As this high voltage power may not be distributed to the customers directly, this must be stepped down to the desired level at the receiving end with the help of step down transformer. Thus electrical power transformer thus plays a vital role in power transmission.

The observation glasses should show that the buchholz relay is properly filled with oil. If necessary, bleeding can be done from the two cocks. The drain plug should be tight and no leaking should be there. The cover on the connection chamber should be opened to observe whether connections are properly tight.
