Carburizing Hardening Process

Induction hardening takes place by keeping the object inside an applicator coil of copper tube with one or more turns through which alternative current will be passed. Water will be circulated through the tube to avoid overheating. While the object will be rotating with in the coil, the quenching media(water or polymer) will be operated through another quenching coil for instant quenching to achieve the maximum efficiency. Hardening of steels and cast iron components may be done for obtaining certain properties including, but not limited to, strength, fatigue, and wear resistance. Numerous industrial applications require a hard wear-resistant surface called the case, and a relatively soft, tough core. This is achieved by case hardening. The first three methods change the chemical composition, carburizing by the addition of carbon, nitriding by the addition of nitrogen and cyanidingcarbonitriding by the addition of both carbon and nitrogen. The last two methods do not change the chemical composition of the steel and are essentially shallow-hardening methods. In flame and induction hardening the steel must be capable of being hardened and therefore, the carbon content must be about 0.30 percent or higher.
