Presto’s Dart Impact Tester is used to determine the impact of load on a plastic film under specific conditions to analyze the effect of a free falling dart. A load of falling dart damages the plastic film under specified conditions. The testing instrument is widely used in plastic industries for judging the strength and stability of the plastic films and similar products. Dart Impact is also known as impact failure load of plastic films is described as the load of the hemispherical shaped dart, falling on the plastic sheet or film held in a suitable clamp from a particular height, which causes the collapse of 50% of samples tested. The test comprises of dart configuration and drop height with a different weight of the dart. Test results can be used as a quality control evaluation and also for end use assessments. The dart is designed in a hemispherical form that can be dropped from uneven heights. It is held by  a electromagnetic dart holder which released by pressing a button from varying heights. BMC-B1 is designed for determination of mechanical properties of packaging materials such as plastic films, laminates and paper by a free falling dart from a certain height. This instrument is designed according to ASTM D1709 with method A & B.   PrincipleBefore starting the test, choose test method, and estimate an initial mass and Δm. Start the test. If the first specimen fails, decrease the mass of the falling dart by Δm. If the first specimen is not a failure, increase the mass of the falling dart by Δm. Continue the test according to this rule. In brief, increase or decrease by Δm according to whether the former specimen is a failure or not. After 20 specimens, calculate the total number of failed specimens N. If N equals to 10, the test is over. If N is less than 10, add specimens and continue to test until N equals to 10. If N is greater than 10, add specimen and continue the test until the number of non-failure specimens reaches 10. The Free Falling Dart Impact Tester is used for PVC pipes, PVC ducting pipes & HDPE pipes as per IS & DOT specifications.The impact properities of the polymetric materials are directly related to the overall toughness of the materual. Toughness is defined as the ability of the polymer to absorb applied energy. The area under the stress-strain curve isdirectly proportional to thetoughness of a material. Impact strength is a measurement of toughness. The higher the impact strength of a material the higher the toughness and vice-versa. Impact resistance is the ability of a material to resist breaking under a shock loading or the ability to resist the fracture under stress applied at high speed.

The falling dart impact tester covers your determination of the energy that causes Polyethylene film to fail under specified conditions, with the impact of the free falling dart. This energy is expressed in terms of weight of the dart falling from a specified height, which would result in 50% failure of specimen tested.
