The Insulated glass is a prefabricated unit made of two or more glass panes, which have been separated by an air gap and edge-sealed together. This edge seal not only binds the individual sheets of glass together to maintain the mechanical strength of the joint but also protects the space between the glass from outside influences. The air enclosed between the two glass panes is dried with a desiccant. Because of the low heat conductivity of the enclosed dry air between the glass panes, heat transmission through the window is drastically reduced. Tempered, Laminated, reflective, low-E, tinted or clear glass can be used. Glass is a good conductor of heat, so, just a single glazed pane window will not insulate your property very well. Whereas, air is a poor conductor of heat and therefore has superior insulating properties. The air gap between each glass pane is sealed around the perimeter, that helps keep more heat inside the room during the winter and outside during the summer. Most units are manufactured with the same thickness of glass used on both panes. DGU Glass are manufactured in range of thickness from 3 mm to 10 mm (18″ to 38″) or more in special applications. The glass can be a laminated glass or a tempered glass. The DGU glass will generally be up to five times stronger than ordinary annealed glass depending on the glass type and thickness. These are used when strength, thermal resistance and safety are important considerations. Special applications such as acoustic attenuation or security may require wide ranges of thicknesses to be incorporated in the same unit. An insulating glass unit commonly consists of two (sometimes more) panes of glass separated by a spacer material and sealed together at the edge. The insulating airspace is filled with air or a noble gas, such as argon inside. Each glass pane has two surfaces, so typical double-paned IGUs have four surfaces. Using argon in the air space between the two panes of glass provides further insulation, as these gases are denser than air and less likely to let heat conduct through the IGU. Combined with a low-e glass coating, these gases work to improve the window's overall u-value, which is a measure of the heat transmission through a building part (such as a wall or window). The lower the u-value, the better the insulating glass unit.
