These include - ADI (Austempered Ductile Iron), AGI (Austempered Gray Iron) and CADI (Carbidic Austempered Ductile Iron). ADI is made by special heat treatment of cast ductile iron castings and ADI parts exhibit twice the strength of ductile iron with good toughness, wear resistance and fatigue strength. ADI parts are used extensively in automotive, agricultural, mining, construction and railway sectors, and have successfully replaced steel fabrications, weldments and forgings.

A 40-50% reduction in tool-life compared to NCI can be expected. Tensile strength and ductility of ADI are near to steel, but the chip formation process classifies ADI as a ductile iron (segmented chip formation). High thermal and mechanical loads, due to high strength and ductility, will concentrate wear near the cutting edge, due to the segmented chip formation process, and wear on the top rake. Hardening during chip formation results in high dynamic cutting forces. The cutting edge temperature is a strong factor for determining wear. Grades to use are 3210 or 3225. The preferred geometries are -KF, -KM, -KR and -KRR. When finishing, consider wiper geometry WMX.

Ductile Iron (also known as Spheroidal Graphite Iron or Nodular Cast Iron) was invented in 1949. Ductile Iron retains the corrosion resistance of Cast Iron but has more than double the tensile strength [Cast Iron- 180 MPa (min), Ductile Iron - 420 MPa (min)]. The essential difference between Ductile and Cast Iron lies in the shape of the graphite in the microstructure of the metal. In Cast Iron, the graphite is present in plate-like flakes, which makes Cast Iron brittle. But in Ductile Iron, the shape of the graphite becomes a spheroidal nodule, which offers better mechanical properties and makes Ductile Iron sturdy, structurally stronger and shock-proof.
