An evaporative condenser is a condenser integrated into a cooling tower which rejects the latent heat of condensation of refrigerant (Ammonia/Freon) through a coil to the surroundings by means of evaporation. Water sprayed onto the coil exchanges heat with the refrigerant. A small quantity of water is evaporated into the air thereby cooling the remaining water cascading to the basin at the bottom. Post evaporation the saturated air passes through the drift eliminators and then forced out using a fan. Construction And Working Of Evaporative Condenser : In evaporative condensers, both air and water are used to extract heat from the condensing refrigerant. Figure shows the schematic of an evaporative condenser. Evaporative condensers combine the features of a cooling tower and water-cooled condenser in a single unit. In these condensers, the water is sprayed from top part on a bank of tubes carrying the refrigerant and air is induced upwards. There is a thin water film around the condenser tubes from which evaporative cooling takes place. The heat transfer coefficient for evaporative cooling is very large. Hence, the refrigeration system can be operated at low condensing temperatures (about 11 to 13 K above the wet bulb temperature of air). The water spray counter current to the airflow acts as cooling tower. The role of air is primarily to increase the rate of evaporation of water. The required air flow rates are in the range of 350 to 500 m3/h per TR of refrigeration capacity.

The refrigerant gas discharges from the compressor into the inlet connection of the PMC-E condenser. Heat from the refrigerant dissipates through the coil tubes to the water cascading downward over the tubes. Simultaneously, air is forced in through the two-stage vane axial fans at the base of the condenser and travels upward through the coils, opposite the water flow. A small portion of the water evaporates, removing heat from the system; the saturated hot air is discharged to the atmosphere. The remaining water falls to the sump at the bottom of the condenser where it is recirculated by the pump up through the water distribution system and back down over the coils.

General: Evaporative Condenser is a combination of Condenser and Cooling Tower. It substitutes the Shell & Tube Condenser and totally eliminate the Cooling water circuit. Although ancient in concept, evaporative condensers have been drawing attention of all design, development and application engineers and the recent products are the result of combined efforts of those interested in energy saving in refrigeration systems. Energy Saving: Unlike Shell & Tube and Air-cooled condenser, Evaporative condenser performance depends on ambient Wet Bulb Temperature. It is theoretically possible to lower the condensing temperature to a 35°C level from 40°C for a wet bulb temperature of 28°C, by replacing a S & T condenser. Any lowering of condensing temperature results in decreasing of compressor power input. Besides, since large cooling water circulation pumps are eliminated, power consumption on this account is also reduced. Features: Available in normal capacity range of 187 MCals/Hr( 61TR) to 3393 MCals/Hr( 1122TR) Coil bundle is made of SS 304 tubes with buffed surface unlike others which is hot dip galvanised with a rough surface inducing scale formation. FRP side panels for the coil sections and FRP doors and top cover for the fan section to provide corrossion free service thus adding to the life of the unit. The structure for coil bundle is made out of formed GI sheets. The tie-rod support for the coil bundle has PVC/ Neoprene (optional) sleeve to prevent damage to the tubes due to any vibration of the tubes in the coil bundle. Principle of OperationThe vapor to be condensed is circulated through a condensing coil, which is continually wetted on the outside by a recirculating water system. Air is pulled over the coil, causing a small portion of the recirculating water to evaporate. The evaporation removes heat from the vapor in the coil, causing it to condense. Configuration INDUS MAKES manufactures two types of evaporative condensers: Combined Flow and Counter Flow. Combined Flow:Combined Flow is the use of both a condensing coil and fill surface for heat transfer in an evaporative condenser. The addition of fill surface to the traditional evaporative condenser design reduces evaporation in the coil section, reducing the potential for scaling and fouling. INDUS MAKES’s combined flow evaporative condensers utilize the parallel flow of air and spray water over the coil, and crossflow air/water flow through the fill surface.In parallel flow, air and water flow over the coil in the same direction.
