SICAM Fault Passage Indicator (FPI) is a device that is used for detection and signalling of short circuit and earth-fault on medium voltage cable networks.4 external current sensors detect the phase faults (R, Y, B) and earth-fault (E).The current sensor detects phase fault and earth-fault current based on the set current threshold detection and communicate to SICAM FPI via an optical signal.By using the rotary switch available on the individual sensor, you can set the fault current threshold for phase sensors from 200 A to 1200 A (Type 1 Series), 200 A to 800 A (Type 2 Series) and for earth sensor from 10 A to 100 A (Type 1 Series), 40 A to 300 A (Type 2 Series).When the current exceeds the set threshold level, the current sensor provides an input via plastic fibre-optic cable to SICAM FPI. In this condition, the corresponding LEDs blink. In normal operating condition, there is no LED indication.SICAM FPI is used as a fault detection and indication unit. SICAM FPI is used in the feeder and distribution automation of secondary medium-voltage systems that ranges from 10 kV to 36 kV.

CSFPI, Fault Passage Indicator — Earth is designed to detect and indicate Earth fault on a cable system, in RMU networks with one input / open ring arrangement. The unit will indicate a fault condition when current is detected above set trip current settings. Fault current is sensed by cable mounted sensor, which gives signal to indication unit. Sensor must be mounted on screened cable and can be retrofitted on the cable.If the Earth current exceeds programmed set current for programmed response time the fault will be indicated by red flashing LED and relay contact will be activated. Reset occurs automatically by preset time passage or by a external potential free input or by recovering of 230V AC (Not a Aux. Supply) Voltage or by manually via push button. A ‘Functional Test’ can also be carried out on field by pressing for more than 8 Sec and ‘Battery Test‘ by pressing the Push button for more than 6 Sec. The sensor for earth fault detection is a summation type current sensor and it is dimensioned in such a way that if can be mounted around all three phases of the network. Programmable parameters can be set through DIP switches which are accessible by opening the Front Cover of the CSFPI indication unit. The main function of fault passage indicating system is to identify faults occurring in the downstream section from the point of its installation in the medium voltage system. This is achieved by continuous monitoring of voltage presence and current flow in medium voltage line. Any increase in current along with absence of voltage is signaled by the equipment. Fault condition is indicated by flashing lights in FPI; this information is sent using radio signals to the communication gateway installed nearby for onward transmission to SCADA system at the control centre through a suitable communication channel. Using this system, the utility acquires information regarding the section of the line having fault. This identification helps eliminate the patrolling of entire line for finding the fault, ultimately reducing restoration time.
