Common Name: Heliconia Family: Heliconiaceae Light: lot of sun and heat. Soil: Heliconias should be planted in a draining soil with the top sticking out of the ground. Heliconias flourish well in loamy soils rich in humus Water: Overwatering may cause the roots to rot.

T. dealbata is an evergreen, marginal aquatic perennial forming a clump of long-stalked, erect, narrowly ovate leaves to 40cm in length, covered with white powder, and slender stems bearing panicles of purple flowers 2cm across .

Coconut is an important plantation crop in Goa being cultivated in an area of 25,730 ha with an average yield of 5014 kg per hectare. In general, coconut is planted at a spacing of 8x8m and interspace in majority of the coconut farms is either unutilized or underutilized. Hence, in order to enhance the profitability of coconut, various crops and other components were evaluated. Among them, Heliconia, an exotic introduced flower, crop performed well under coconut plantation for three years (2009-2012). The study included 45 varieties of heliconia under coconut garden for various vegetative and floral characters. The flowers were supplied to the market and the feedback from the market is documented to short list the most promising heliconia types with high floral value.

Heliconia is the only genus in the plant family heliconiacea, which is a member of a larger taxonomic category called the order Zingiberales. There are several very obvious characteristics by which they can be recognized, including large leaves and large, colorful, bracteate inflorecences.Most taxonomists recognize eight separate families in the zingiberales : Musacea (Bananas),Strelitziacea (Bird of Paradise), Lowiacea, Heliconiacea (Heliconias), Zingiberacea (Gingers), Costacea (Costus), Cannacea (Cannas) and Marantacea (Prayer Plants).
