It tones up the tissues and is sometimes prescribed in fever. The powder is sniffed in catarrh. Modern research has proved its bronchodilator property. Galangal is used in cattle medicine, and the Arabs use it to make their horses fiery. It is included in several compound preparations, but is not now often employed alone.

Physico chemical properties: refractive index at 20°c = 1.4600 to 1.4750 specific gravity at 20°c = 0.83000 to 0.89000 optical rotation = -4° to -10° flash point = 70°c.
