Typically, Seals vary from O-rings such that external pressure force is used for effecting sealing actions. The seal construction will consist of a sprung main sealing lip which has a point contact with the shaft. Seals also may have additional dust lips to avoid entry of foreign particles. Seal selection is based on sealing pressure, service temperature, lubrication requirements and cleanliness of environment.

Through years of experience and continued R&D by Kessels, the most reliable, user friendly and maintenance free method of inter-stage and end steam sealing for Turbines have been found to be the use of Carbon Rings, Labyrinth Seals and Sealing Fins. Kessels offers all the three options in its varied range of Steam Turbines. Kessels Single Stage Turbines use special carbon ring packing for mechanical sealing of the steam for their ease of use and in-situ replacement. Thespecially designed Labyrinth seals are machined from special grade stainless steel, are of spring backed type and placed between the rotor and the casing to prevent and minimize steam leakage. Under normal operating circumstances, these labyrinth seals do not contact the rotorand do not warrant any maintenance for an extended period of time. The larger Multistage Turbines from Kessels use J-Type sealing fins for mechanical sealing and preventing steam leakage. J-Type sealing fins are significantly safer than regular seals, being easily replaceable and limiting the damage to the rotor by rubbing in the event of an accidental run-away.

Labyrinth Seal is used with SN, SNA, SNH, SNL, SD and SAF type housings. For large Plummer block housings, like SDJ, SDG SBD, THD types, the Labyrinth Seal is the preferred choice. For SOFN housings the labyrinth seals are supplied with internal design having additional external oil traps and are called ‘Sealing Collar’ When operating conditions are severe or when the speed is high, Labyrinth seals are recommended. To prevent rotation of the seal on the shaft, on O-section cord of synthetic rubber is incorporated in a groove provided in the labyrinth ring bore. The maximum permissible misalignment of the shaft in approximately 0.30. The labyrinth seal can be used at temperature range of - 500 C to + 200.0 C, Labyrinth Seals are suitable for grease or oil lubrication and axial shaft displacement but not suitable for vertical mounting. For external condition with dust, sand, grit, sharp objects, clippings, splinters and sunshine Labyrinth seal is suitable but it is unsuitable with splashing fluids.
