The Lead Smelting Mini Blast Furnace, also known as (Mandir Bhati) or (Shahi Bhati) in India, works on the principle of just like a blast furnace. A rectangular refractory brick chamber is constructed with conical hood at top of it. Mini Blast Smelting Furnace is the most basic furnace and works on continuous basis. Old Battery Scrap is broken and battery plates are separated from the battery PVC box and PVC Separator. These battery plates are now manually charged into the furnace as raw material and soft coke is used to burn the furnace and to raise the required temperature for melting of lead, Soft coke also act like a reducing agent for the easily extraction of lead out of battery plates, as the temperature of the furnace reaches at the required stage, the molten lead starts flowing from the furnace bottom and is collected into a small pit. From the Pit manually ingots are casted into moulds, an average of up to 20 to 25 Kgs. Lead bearing slag is produced as a by-product. Air Pollution Control System is provided to this type of Furnace to control the air pollution generated from the furnace. For production of hot metal, the unit has installed a blast furnace. In the blast furnace, the burden of iron ore and coke is reduced into hot metal. Coke is used both as reductant and fuel. To maintain heat in the furnace a stove has been set up. A blast furnace of 262 Cu M has also been set up. The production per Cu M is 2.40 tons per day. Considering 340 working days per annum, the installed capacity of the plant is 214,000 TPA. The hot metal produced shall be transferred to Electric Arc Furnace for primary refining or cast in pig casting machine.

The hot metal is mainly used in the steel melting shop as a raw material and surplus hot metal poured in pig casting machine. SLRM is operating a 262 m3 (working volume) Blast furnace since 2012. Sinter , calibrated lump ore, limestone, dolomite, quartzite and coke are charged into the MBF from top and hot air is passed from the bottom. Ascending oxygen in the air reacts with the carbon in the coke to form CO which reduces the descending iron oxide to iron. Hot metal at required temperature is collected in the hearth at the bottom of the furnace and is tapped periodically and transferred to steel melting shop (EOF). The annual production capacity is about 2,76,000 tones.
