They employ a shell type outer ring made from a thin special steel plate which is accurately drawn, carburized and quenched, thus providing the lowest sectional height among the needle roller bearings. There are two types of bearings available in this series; the caged type and the full complement type. The appropriate type can be selected according to the operating conditions. The caged type has a structure in which the needle rollers are accurately guided by the cage and thrust rings. It is useful for applications at high-speed rotation. The full complement type needle roller bearing, on the other hand, is suitable for heavy-load applications at low-speed rotation. Since these bearings are press-fitted into the housing, no fixtures for axial positioning are needed. They are ideal for use in mass-produced articles that require economy, and have a wide variety of applications.

A needle roller bearing is a bearing which uses small cylindrical rollers.The difference between a needle roller bearing and roller bearing is the ratio of diameter and length of their rollers, when the ratio of the diameter and the length of roller of a roller bearing is between the interval of 0.1 to 0.4, that roller bearing is called a needle roller bearing. They are used to reduce the friction of a rotating surface. Needle bearings have a large surface area that is in contact with the bearing outer surfaces compared to ball bearings. Additionally there is less added clearance (difference between the diameter of the shaft and the diameter of the bearing) so they are much more compact. The typical structure consists of a needle cage which orients and contains the needle rollers, the needle rollers themselves, and an outer race (sometimes the housing itself). Radial needle bearings are cylindrical and use rollers parallel to the axis of the shaft. Thrust needle bearings are flat and use a radial pattern of needles.

Needle roller thrust bearings are fitted with a form-stable cage to reliably retain and guide a large number of needle rollers. The very small diameter deviation of the rollers within one assembly enables these bearings to accommodate heavy axial loads and shock loads. The ends of the rollers are relieved slightly to modify the line contact between the raceways and rollers. This prevents stress peaks at the roller ends to extend bearing service life. Needle roller thrust bearings provide a high degree of stiffness within a minimum axial space. In applications where the faces of adjacent machine components can serve as raceways, needle roller thrust bearings take space not more than a conventional thrust washer.
