Filter presses generally work in a "batch" manner. They are loaded with slurry before completing a filtering cycle and producing a batch of solid filtered material, called the filter "cake". The solid is removed, the press re-loaded with slurry and the batch cycle repeated. A filter press uses increased pressure to maximize the rate of filtration and produce a final solid with a low water content.

Sparkler Type Plate Filters or any other filter media is placed over each plate. The slurry mother liquor is pumped over the plates through the specially designed manifold. Filtration process is continued till the desired cut off pressure limit is achieved. Then, the cake is manually removed from each of the filter plate cavity.

The Vertical Plate Filter (VF) is a pressure filter and consists of a vertical tank with vertically positioned filter plates. VF filter plates filter on both sides, offering a large filtration area in a relative small vessel. The VF filter can be used for a variety of applications. VF filters are suitable for wet or dry cake discharge. Wet cake discharge filter models are cleaned by built-in spray pipes. The slurry is discharged through a large bottom drain. In Dry Cake Discharge filter models, the filter is equipped with a pneumatic vibrator. The cake is discharged either through a hydraulic operated quick opening tank bottom or a butterfly valve. The filter cake can be dried by compressed air, inert gas or steam before the cake is discharged by the vibrator. Vertical Plate Filters can be utilized for manual, semi-automatic or fully automatic operation. The Auto Cake Discharge Filter is the latest addition to our existing range of filters. This filter is used where automatic cleaning of plates is required without opening the filter. Thus, the filter requires lesser change over-time. In this type of filter, all the plates have an 80-micron wire-mesh screen welded to the top of the filter plate. These are rotated at the end of the process to automatically discharge the cake and make the assembly ready for the new filter aid bed. Also, a spray pipe is provided for feeding the cleaning liquid under pressure. This helps remove residual, if any, after the cake discharge. The filter can be sized for the required area of filtration. Dirty fluid is fed under pressure in to inlet manifold. It is distributed equally in plates. Filter papers clamped & supported between plates separate the dirt & form a layer (cake). This effects finer filtration. Differential pressure is monitored in inlet and outlet manifold. At a preset level, the indexing cycle starts. First the inlet actuated valve is closed. Compressed air is pushed in the inlet manifold to remove the fluid inside the plates. This also purges the filter cake and makes it dry. Then with help of hydraulic or pneumatic cylinders the top plate is opened. A geared drive moves the belt which is supporting the filter cake. Once the complete filter cake is pulled out, the top plate closes and inlet actuated valve is opened. Normal filtration process begins again. A separate clean tank provides clean fluid to your machine while the indexing process is going on. For finer filtration we need to use finer filter media. But such media offers resistance to flow and hence cannot be used in gravity filter. If we could increase the differential pressure across the filter media, we could achieve finer filtration.
