Pot PTFE bearing consists of a metal piston supported by a disc of unreinforced elastomer that is confined within a metal cylinder for allowing rotational movement about an axis in the horizontal plane and to bear and to bear and transmit vertical load. Pot bearings may be provided with sliding assembly (with or without restraint in the form of a guide along the desired direction to bear and transmit horizontal force) comprising of stainless steel plate attached to metal backing plate sliding in a horizontal plane over sliding material confined in recess(s) on the piston which shall be termed as sliding/Guided Pot bearings. Depending on the desired degree of freedom Pot bearings may be of three types as follows:

POT Cum PTFE Bearings:-   POT Cum PTFE Free Sliding Bearing:- Bears Vertical Load. Allows sliding movement in all directions. Allows Rotation in all direction.   POT Cum PTFE Guided Bearing:- Bears Vertical Load Horizontal Load. Allows sliding movement in one direction. Allows Rotation in all direction.   POT Fixed Bearing:- Bears Vertical Load Horizontal Load. Allows Rotation in all direction.

Free bearing allows rotation, longitudinal movement & transverse movements. The main components of a free bearing are the same as those of a fixed bearing, but are able to provide two-direction movements. PTFE is a well known polymer which possesses some remarkable properties. The coefficient of friction when sliding against a polished surface can be as low as 0.01 which compares with ice sliding on ice. In addition, its coefficient of friction is the lowest at highest specific pressures which make it particularly suitable for use in structural bearings. In order to minimize space requirements, Pot Bearings are designed for relatively high contact pressures against the structure. This also ensures lowest friction values. Most elastomers cannot sustain such pressures in their free state and must be effectively contained to prevent over straining. When constrained in this way, the elastomer behaves as a semi-viscous fluid and can safely accommodate useful degrees of angular displacement. These bearings offer an economical solution where elastomeric bearings are unable to accommodate high horizontal movement at low reactions on the supporting columns. They can be bonded to elastomer pad to accommodate rotation. In these type of bearings linear movement is provided by sliding of stainless steel plate over PTFE sheet. To overcome high friction in steel sliding bearings, PTFE is used to provided translation about the axis perpendicular to the plane of sliding
