Portland Slag Cement, commonly known as PSC, is blended cement. Slag is, essentially, a non-metallic product comprising of more than 90% glass with silicates and alumino-silicates of lime. At JSW Cement, we use superior quality slag produced at our steel manufacturing plant, conforming to IS: 12089 standards for producing PSC. It is created with a combination of upto 45- 50% slag, 45% – 50% clinker, and 3-5% gypsum. PSC has been voted as the most suitable cement for mass construction because of its low heat of hydration.

PSC or Portland Slag cement is manufactured by either grinding the Portland clinker with gypsum and granulated slag or blending the ground granulated blast furnace slag (GGBS) with Ordinary Portland cement by means of mechanical blenders. Normal composition of portland cement is 30 % clinker, 5 % gypsum and 70 % blast furnace granulated slag. The quality of slag used in cement manufacturing is governed by IS 12089:1987. PSC has been voted as the most suitable cement for mass construction because of its low heat of hydration. Slow hydration of PSC liberates the C-S-H gel over a longer time period thus reducing the pores porosity of concrete. The dense concrete is more suitable for structures in the coastal regions as the flow of water inside the concrete is restricted resulting in the increase durability of the structure. PSC (in required proportion) offers an improved resistance to sulphate attack from the sea water because of low water permeability, depleted quantum of Ca(OH)2 and C3A content.

Portland slag cement is manufactured by intergrinding Portland cement clinker, gypsum and Blust furnace granulated slag. It is also manufactured by blending OPC with ground Granulated Blast furnace slag through mechanical blenders.

Maha – Portland Slag Cement (PSC), conforming to the IS 455-1989, is manufactured from high quality clinker and superior quality granulated blast furnace slag. The slag used contains more than 95% glass content – the most desired parameter to manufacture PSC. The unique feature of our Grinding Units used for manufacturing this cement is the Vertical Roller Mills (VRM) – the most modern technology imported from LoescheGmBH, Germany. The clinker and slag are separately ground to reach high fineness level and then blended in a high efficiency mechanical blender. This has not only enabled us to achieve high fineness (Blaine 3700+ cm2g) in our Maha Cement but also steep particle size distribution (PDS) which helps Maha Cement achieve high early strength and excellent durability properties in concrete.
