The basic strength material is steel cords placed at fixed pitch, core compound and cover compounds are added in pre-formatting process under constant tension. The core rubber ensures adequate penetration among the steel cords. This will minimise the corrosion of steel in case of any damage to the belt. This is a 7x7 (7 strands of 7 wires) open type steel cord (or cable) with four different wire diameters. The advantage of open type steel cords is the high rubberization of the cord gaps - for higher steel cord pull-out strength and better corrosion prevention. The cable diameter is measured as per DIN 3051.   In a steel cord conveyor belt, Z and S lay steel cords are used alternately to ensure a straight running behaviour of the belt. The illustration shows a regular lay. The lay length of the sheath is the length along the strand in order for a wire to make one complete revolution around the king wire.
