Sulfosulfuron inhibits acetolactate synthase (ALS), also called acetohydroxyacid synthase (AHAS), a key enzyme in the biosynthesis of the branched-chain amino acids isoleucine, leucine, and valine. Plant death results from events occurring in response to ALS inhibition and low branched-chain amino acid production, but the actual sequence of phytotoxic processes is unclear. Sulfosulfuron is a selective early emergence herbicide used for the effective control of Phalaris minor in wheat crop.

Headmaster effectively controls the narrow leaf weeds like phalaris minor (mandusiguli danda) and broadleaf weeds like chenopodium (bathu), malilotus (sainji). Headmaster inhibits the synthesis of amino acids and stops the metabolic process, with the result weeds dry up and ultimately dies.
