It has pressor and antidiuretic effects. It is used in posterior pituitary lobe hormone preparations and is an analogue of vasopressin used as a vasoactive drug in the management of low blood pressure. It has been found to be effective when norepinephrine does not help.So it is used in norepinephrine-resistant septic shock and hepatorenal syndrome. In addition, it is used to treat bleeding esophageal varices.Following IV injection, lysine vasopressin are released following the enzymatic cleavage of 3 glycyl moieties. Terlipressin acetate 0.12 mg/ml solution for injection is used for treatment of bleeding from dilated veins in the food pipe leading to your stomach (bleeding oesophageal varices).
