A heated sensor is inserted into the stream of gas flow. The cooling effect of the gas is measured, transduced and interpreted as flow. The cooling effect is a direct function of the heat transfer that takes place due to the flow of gas. The heat transfer in turn is a direct function of the velocity as well as density of the process gas. Hence variations in temperature and pressure in the process gas are automatically compensated. For all practical purposes the output signal obtained is pressure and temperature compensated “massflow” signal. Thus the compensated flow independent of pressure and temperature variation is indicated without need for any separate transducers for the same.

The general purpose gas flow switch is a great choice for a broad range of relatively clean gases with non-coating characteristics. Media examples include nitrogen and scrubber exhaust fumes. The 1A relay provides a reliable switch interface with remote devices such as a PLC, SCADA or alarm. The short sensor is intended for use in pipe or ducting from 12” to 1-12”; the long sensor is applied in 2” and up. The switch set point may be adjusted from 1 to 90 fps. The Series TDS Thermal Dispersion Flow Switch offers solid state flow detection of non-coating liquids for pump and process protection. SPDT output allows for interfacing with remote PLC or relay control device. The adjustable switch point is factory calibrated at 0.2 fps with LED indication of flow and calibration status. Units feature selectable NO or NC operation and are not damaged by over-ranging flow velocities.

The Thermal Flow Switch Monitor SP-150 is based on the principle of thermal dispersion. A typical configuration uses two Temperature Detectors set within the tip of the sensor. One Temperature Detector is heated a few degrees above the other one. As the process medium flows over the tip of the sensor it disperses some of the heat from the heated Temperature Detector. The delta temperature is a function of flow velocity and converted into electronic signal. The open collector changes state once the set point has been reached.
