Trickling filter is an attached growth process i.e. process in which microorganisms responsible for treatment are attached to an inert packing material. Packing material used in attached growth processes include rock, gravel, slag, sand, redwood, and a wide range of plastic and other synthetic materials. Simple  ,reliable, biological process. The terms trickle filter, trickling biofilter, biofilter, biological filter andbiological trickling filter are often used to refer to a trickling filter. These systems have also been described as roughing filters, intermittent filters, packed media bed filters, alternative septic systems, percolating filters, attached growth processes, and fixed film processes. The bio-film that develops in a trickling filter may become several millimetres thick and is typically a gelatinous matrix that contains many species of bacteria, and amoeboidprotozoa, annelids, round worms and insect larvae and many other micro fauna. This is very different from many other bio-films which may be less than 1 mm thick. Within the thickness of the biofilm both aerobic and anaerobic zones can exist supporting both oxidative and reductive biological processes Advantages Appropriate for small- to medium-sized communities. The under drains system is important both as a collection unit and as a porous structure through which air can circulate. The collected liquid is passed to a settling tank where the solids are separated from the treated waste water. In practice, a portion of the liquid collected in the under drain system or the settled effluent is recycled, usually to dilute strong influent waste water and to bring the filter effluent back in contact with the biological population for further treatment.

Treatment of sewage & recycle of it to get reusable water has now been acknowledged as an economical & commercially viable proposition.
