AFFF Foam Fire Protection System Foam water spray systems can be used for a combination of Class A and Class B hazards. They are mostly applicable to the protection of two-dimensional flammable liquid hazards. Method of operation for foam water spray systemsFoam water systems generally work by allowing foam concentrate to mix with water flowing into the piping system. These systems are equipped with a bladder tank containing foam. When a fire is detected a signal is sent to the releasing panel to open the deluge valve allowing water to flow. At the same time, piping to the bladder tank flows and pressurizes the outer shell of the bladder tank which forces foam concentrate to travel into the system piping and then into the Foam Proportioner. Water Spray System consists of a network of piping connected to a reliable source of fire protection water supply and equipped with Water Spray Nozzles for sqecific water discharge and distribution over the areas to be protected. Normally a Deluge Valve is used for the purpose.  Operation could be manual but usually it is automatic and actuation is typically done through fire / heat / smoke detectors.  There are two types of system installed by us, viz., High Velocity Water Spray & Medium Velocity Water Spray System for different types of hazards.  This type of system is  most often used for protection of Transformers, Reactors, Vessels, Equipment, Spheres etc.

Medium Velocity Water Spray Nozzles has an external deflector, which discharges water in a directional cone shaped pattern of small droplet size. The water is uniformly distributed over the surface to be protected. The nozzle is used in deluge water spray system for special hazard fire protection application. As the design and intent of specific water spray system may vary considerably, a MV nozzle is made available in several combination of orifice sizes and spray angles. The minimum desirable pressure to achieve a reasonable spray pattern is 1.4 Kg./Sq.cm. The water distribution pattern as shown in the graph in following pages is at an average pressure of 2.0 Kg/Sq.cm. The change in pressure between 1.4 to 3.5 Kg./sq.cm. does not affect considerable change in spray angle. The spray pattern shown is with indoor application. System designer must consider wind velocity while designing the system for outdoor application. Field obstruction if any affecting the spray pattern of the nozzle must also be considered. The nozzle may be oriented to any position which is deemed necessary to cover the hazard. Some of the areas where this system is widely used are:                     Horizontal storage vessels (like LPG Bullets, NH3 storage tanks etc.)   Vertical storage vessels (like benzene, xylene, toluene tank age etc.)   Spherical storage vessels (like LPG bullets, spheres etc.)   Spot protection (Protection of selective areas/ equipments)    Maintenance  Use Teflon tape or soft thread sealant on male thread of the nozzle. The nozzles must be hand tightened into the fitting. LIFECO make wrench must be used to tighten the nozzle unit into the fitting. Excessive tightening torque may result into serious damage to nozzle arms and the deflector which may affect spray pattern of the nozzle and it's performance.

Gravity Flow Spray Pond:Gravity flow spray pond facilitates elimination of spray pumps. Condensers are installed at a height of about 22mtrs & hot water coming out of tail pipes is collected in a common header ( installed at 10mtrs height from G.L. ) & this header is directly connected to spray pond common header. AUTOMATIC M. V. WATER SPRAY SYSTEM FOR HYDROCARBON PLANT General Fires on Hydrocarbon are more frequent due to the volatility of the hydrocarbon and its property to not dissolve with water and lighter than water the fire extinguishing of hydrocarbon fire with water is not possible. In case of fire on Hydrocarbon if the water is sprayed, due to the light weight of the hydrocarbon it will float on the water and reignite them to fire and due to the speed of water the fire will travel from one place to other place. However for these plant water spray system can be provided as exposure protection. That means if any plant is under fire the plants nearby shall be kept cool with the water spray system, while plant under fire shall be applied foam. Hence in this case where plant is using hydrocarbon the exposure should be protected with water spray system designed as per NFPA 15. Water shall be applied at a minimum density of 10.2 lpm/m2 of the exposed area of the plant. A minimum pressure of 1.4 bars shall be achieved at the hydraulically remotes sprayer. However, pressure at the hydraulically favorable sprayer shall not exceed 3.5 bars. The sprayers shall be installed in rows at the ceiling level above the centre of plant floor and spaced at not more than 3M. Quartzoid Bulb Sprinklers (Q. B. S.) Detection is used to for detection of fire which will be connected to deluge valve for auto operation of the system. Q B Sprinklers shall be of 68 Deg. Or 79 Deg. C depending upon the ambient temperature of the location of the plant. For automatic operation of the system the deluge valve shall be provided with pressure switches and annunciation panel. OPERATION DETAILS OF WATER SPRAY SYSTEM In case of fire the Quartzoid Bulb sprinkler shall burst due to heat which allow water in the detection pipe to drain out and in process allow the Deluge valve to open fully. As soon as the Deluge valve opens the water shall flow through the piping to flow water to all water spray nozzles mounted on the ceiling of the plant. The water shall be sprayed in solid conical spray pattern to cover entire area of the plant floor so that the equipment installed shall be kept cool to avoid heat radiation and further ignition of fire. The fire shall be control with the help of the water spray system. The indication of operation of the system shall be available on the control panel with Alarming Siren. Advantages of M.V.
