India is a largely agrarian economy and with its growing population and rapid economic growth the demand for food products is strong, however India ranks as one of the lowest per hectare (128.3 kg) users of fertiliser in the world resulting in low productivity and crop yields. India stands second in the world for fertiliser nutrient consumption next to China. There are 152 fertiliser plants in operation in the country producing various combinations of nutrient formulations. The demand for Fertilisers is higher than the production and the country has to rely on imports. The entire Potash consumption is imported. (2.5 MMT of MOP import during 2012-13). The MRP of phosphatic and potassic fertilizers are market driven wef 1st April 2010 under the Nutrient Based Subsidy (NBS) policy.
